Blizzard Not Making World Of Warcraft 2

As shocking as it might be to you, Blizzard is happy with World of Warcraft. Though it's only got ten million or so subscribers, they're not looking to dump it for some younger, prettier MMORPG.

In an interview with Wired, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime remained mum about the new MMO they're currently developing. He did say this, though: "It’s going to be different and it’s not going to be a sequel to World of Warcraft. It will be different. We’re not trying to replace World of Warcraft with this new MMO. We’re trying to create a different massively multiplayer experience, and hopefully World of Warcraft will still be going strong when that one is released."

It seems like a strong possibility that Diablo 3 or StarCraft 2 will be a launchpad for an MMO based on either franchise. A StarCraft 2 MMO would be much more different from WoW than a Diablo MMO would be if only because StarCraft is a sci-fi series while Diablo and WarCraft are both medieval fantasy. Aside from the in-development Knights of the Old Republic MMO and EVE Online, there really isn't a significant sci-fi presence in the MMO universe and Blizzard might see potential there.

There's always the slight chance they might launch some new franchise, too. I mean, Blizzard's bound to get tired of ridiculous profits eventually, right?
