Borderlands Blend - Day 4: When Diablo III Meets Halo 3 It looks like we’re coming close to the end of our Borderlands Blend, but not before we discuss some very important aspects about the adventuring and travel. And if there’s one thing we know about Borderlands, it’s that Gearbox has modeled the adventuring and questing after the likes of Diablo and the shooting after Halo. So you can pretty much bet that a lot of questing in Borderlands will render loot-runs and adventuring much like Diablo III.

Now you’ve all been finely informed about the half-million weapons featured in the game, as well as the playable characters and the vehicles. But what you may not have known is that there over 600,000 items in the game as well. Yes, 600,000 items. I had to repeat that just in case someone thought I was saying 600 with a lot of extra zeroes. The real kicker is that these items are just as diverse and unique as the weapon randomization module. As it was mentioned in Day 1's news, the more important the item the rarer it will be and, in turn, the harder it will be to find. Hence, this prompts players to go on great-fantastic explorations throughout the fictional world of Pandora.

In order to find some of the rare items scattered throughout Borderlands, players will have to venture through bandit camps, caverns and desert wastelands. The really cool part about adventuring in Borderlands is that every time the game is played nothing stays the same outside the general routes leading from the cities, and the construction of the major cities. In other words, once you hop in your ride and start traversing Pandora’s treacherous terrain, you’ll find that it will be completely different as opposed to if you started the game over. Every cave, canyon, desert stretch, or mountainous area will be randomized, so the experience of travel and adventure can be renewed with each new game played. That’s a serious step in the right direction for sustaining and enhancing the replay values of a game.

Inside bandit camps, caves, etc., resides a great deal of discoverable loot that can be used or sold at neighboring towns or settlements. Like other RPGs, items can be uncovered from a pile of discarded bones, or locked safely away in an electronic chest or box. Another cool element to looting is that whatever the player sees the enemy using/wearing/shooting is something that can be obtained. Unlike just about every other RPG out there, what you see in Borderlands is what you can get. So you won’t see a guy wielding some kick-butt assault rifle or rocket launcher and after you kill him, the weapon or item disappears. You will, however, find a whole lot of that [trickery] in present-day MMOs like World of Warcraft.

Anyway, after you’ve acquired a sack-load of loot it can all be stored in your typical storage facility in town. What’s more is that said loot can also be carried over into multiplayer games, and you can even trade items with other players...especially if said players are real weak and everything. But so far, the adventuring aspects of Borderlands has come together really, really nicely. And just like the developers said, it’s like Halo meets Diablo.
