With the Bourne film trilogy now wrapped up, the video game is finally on its way. Bourne Conspiracy, published by Sierra Entertainment and developed by High Moon Studios, will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 on June 3rd.
The game is an original story rather than a direct adaptation of any of the movies or novels. Players will step into Bourne's shoes during his days as a government assassin and later as an international fugitive. The gameplay is said to be a "seamless mix of hand-to-hand fighting, gunplay and dramatic escapes." You'll also get a chance to recreate the frantic Paris car chase from Bourne Identity, which was probably the only time in recorded history that a guy looked cool driving a Mini Cooper. Crecente at Kotaku noted that releasing the game after the movie trilogy was finished seemed like odd timing from a sales perspective. "Why not release the game in the middle of the Bourne hype not after it's all died down?". I think it's a good sign for the quality of the game that they've waited until now, though. With no movie to worry about, some key creative people are free to help on the game. For example, the trilogy's screenwriter Tony Gilroy helped write Conspiracy's story, and the game's combat system was designed with assistance from Bourne trilogy fight choreographer Jeff Imada . "Wrought with action, combat, elaborate escape scenes and untold story, the Bourne series is making a natural progression into the interactive medium," said Al Simone, senior VP of global marketing at Sierra. "We're pleased to announce that this June gamers will have the chance to experience the dangerously exciting aura and frenetic pace inherent in the Bourne franchise." The team behind this game seems committed to making Conspiracy feel more like a new installment in the Bourne series rather than just some half-assed adaptation of a previously-released film. Matt Damon supposedly isn't interested in making any more films (and isn't doing voiceovers for the game) so this video game and its probable sequels are where Jason Bourne will now live on. |
