Braid turned a lot of heads when it hit XBLA last year and since everyone has been waiting excitedly for what the mastermind behind the title, Jonathan Blow, is working on next. Well in a recent interview with Gamasutra, Blow made a few comments that may have answered that question. It seems that he's been working on a 2D RPG.
Though he was generally vague about the details, he did speak about how he wished to work heavily with conversation and interaction. "When you play an RPG, you usually go and try to exhaust the whole conversation tree, just because you know that there might be something that you get... The way I'm thinking about it for the current game is that what goes on in those dialogs is actually very closely related to the core mechanic that you do in the RPG... But there is more of a tie... a tie between the game mechanic, or the core ideas and themes, and the things that you do." Sounds promising but Blow admitted that a lot might change by the time of the projects completion. "You never know. Next month, it could be a Pacman clone or something," Blow stated. He added: "I'm very excited to do it. But if the patterns of history continue, then I may not be working on it a month from now, so I don't want to start telling people about it." Let's certainly hope he sticks with it, because if Braid has shown us anything it's that he can not only come up with interesting ways to change up old genres, but also implement them expertly. |
