It's been awhile since Gearbox Software has shared any news regarding Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 but that doesn't mean the game's been cancelled. Gearbox head Randy Pitchford says that the World War 2 shooter's development is "going great."

"The game has evolved, I think people are going to be surprised by what they'll see, and it's still evolving," Pitchford told CVG. "One of the reasons why we're not talking about it now is that it's evolving and we need to make further changes before we can start talking about it."

Furious 4 was first announced at E3 2011. It distinguished itself from previous entries in the series by having a more over-the-top, action movie tone. A squad of four wacky characters set out on a journey through Germany to kill Hitler. The team includes a Native American with a hatchet and a crazed Irishman with a taser.

Fans' reactions to Brothers in Arms' new direction were mixed. Earlier games were like Band of Brothers, while Furious 4 channels Inglourious Basterds. That's a pretty jarring shift. It's not surprising that Gearbox is now reworking the initial idea. It remains to be seen how much they're going to change, though.

Initially Furious 4 was slated for a 2012 release. That's not going to happen, though. Gearbox's year is busy enough as is, with two big releases scheduled for the fall: Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines. Pitchford said that after Borderlands 2's launch in September, the company may talk more about Furious.
