Chair Entertainment, the developer of the free XBLA title Undertow, are signed on to create a game based on Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game novel. And after playing Undertow I can see how that formula can be altered to fit in the Battle Room scenario. Although the loss of that deep story line is a huge blow for any fans of Card’s novels. But perhaps Chair and Orson Scott Card felt that it was too lofty a goal to reach for, especially in light of Advent Rising’s failure to ignite sales.
The Battle Room games are being developed for digital distribution services, and will not appear on retail discs. The deal between Chair and Card indicates there will be a series of titles across multiple platforms. "From the moment I started working with Donald Mustard and his team at Chair, I knew that these were the guys I wanted to do the first Ender's Game video game,” said Orson Scott Card in a press release. "It's not enough to slap the Ender's Game name on just any game--it has to be exciting, memorable, and endlessly replayable. Chair shares my understanding of this and I am looking forward to working with them to ensure the game is as authentically Enderish as possible." Over at his Newsweek blog, Level Up, N’Gai Croal got the exclusive announcement and a chance to speak with Chair co-founders Geremy and Donald Mustard about their plans. The new game will use the Unreal Engine, just like Undertow did. Now we just need the sequel, Ender’s Game: Fairyland, to come out a few months after Battle Room. There are only so many times I can slingshot around the Battle Room trying to light up the enemy door. |
