Super hero MMORPG Champions Online's planned July 14th launch has been scrapped. Cryptic Studios has decided to release the game on September 1st instead.

Bill Roper, Champions design director, explained the delay in an announcement on the official website. "It is critically important for an MMO to be as good as it possibly can be at launch. Through our constant dialogue with our vocal and supportive community of beta testers, we quickly realized that in order to implement certain features that we all considered important the development of Champions Online would require more time."

Champions is currently in closed beta. It will be released for the PC first and could eventually arrive on the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well. The fate of the console versions no doubt depends on the reception of the PC version so you can't really fault Cryptic for wanting to ensure that the initial product is as polished as possible.
