The website of Child's Play, the gamer charity founded by Penny Arcade authors Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, has been updated for the 2008 holiday season. It's the sixth year of the charity and they're hoping to top the $1.3 million in contributions from last year.
Volunteers for Child's Play work with employees of participating children’s hospitals to create Amazon.com gift wish lists of toys, movies and video games for patients. When the wish lists for each hospital are finished, they’re added to the Child’s Play website where gamers can pay for the items. In the first five years, the charity has raised over $3.5 million worth of gifts. There's fifty or so hospitals participating throughout the world, ten of which have just signed up to participate this year.
Instead of expressing faux outrage at game companies releasing everything in October/November and then just playing through every single one of them in a Red Bull-induced haze, buy one of those games for a less jaded kid at one of these hospitals. He or she will appreciate it a lot more and you'll be able play every other holiday game in a Red Bull-induced haze with a clear conscience. It's win-win, baby.
