Chrono Trigger Coming To DS

Time to delete that Chrono Trigger ROM. Square Enix announced this morning that the classic SNES RPG will be making its way to Nintendo DS this holiday season.

Yesterday, some of you may have noticed an ominous page on the Square Enix website that featured a ticking clock. Okay, none of you noticed it...but it sent all of us journos into a tizzy because well...Chrono Trigger had a ticking clock on its title screen. The "ticking" sound from the website sounded sort of like the "ticking" from the game's title screen, too. Square Enix, mercifully, made the remake official today so we didn't have to constantly check and over-analyze the website to provide minute-by-minute, "baby trapped in a well" coverage, as with Blizzard.com's slowly-evolving splash page for Diablo 3.

Aside from optimizing it for DS (Touch-screen functional, dual-screen display), they won't be altering the game too much for the remake, which suits me just fine because the original was damn near perfect. They are throwing in a new dungeon, though, which I assume will be a side quest so they won't have to rewrite any of the existing story. They'll also be adding wireless play but it's not explained further in the press release - is it a new mini-game or will they let players pit their parties against each other? Maybe they'll mention it on the website soon - guess I'll be camping out there, after all.
