Comic Con: Alan Wake’s Gameplay Is Better Than Expected

published: 2009-07-26 13:00:32
Remedy’s upcoming, third-person adventure game, Alan Wake, has been kept under wraps for quite a while. The game didn’t re-emerge until this year’s E3 event and even then it wasn’t all that impressive. However, at the San Diego Comic Con the game was on display and it looked better than expected.

Alan Wake was originally a game all about light sourcing, light devices and a few robed guys hunting down the player character at night. The game has radically undergone some major improvements in the pacing and action area, as it now has players relying on light to district, disrupt or paralyze enemies. Weapons still play a part, but only appear to be effective when used in correlation with light. So this isn’t just another Silent Hill or Resident Evil.

One of the things that really stands out is the cool narrative that happens while gamers are playing…it doesn’t pause to explain a scenario or stop so Alan can direct players where to go. Instead, everything happens on the fly and it’s up to players to react in real-time as events unfold on –screen. It’s actually really cool.

Another highlight to the game is that the atmosphere and environments are put together very nicely. The game acts like it’s been designed to play out like a horror movie that’s actually worth watching. Don’t take my word for it, though, the new gameplay footage can be seen below, provided in part by GameTrailers.
