A lot of people have written off the PC as a gaming platform, but developer Crytek doesn't share their view. They're the ones who brought first-person shooter Crysis exclusively to the PC last fall. A risky move, considering how sales figures for PC games are generally lower. However, it seems Crytek's not willing to take any chances like that in the future.
Cevat Yerli, president of the German development studio, told PC Play magazine that they will not be releasing anymore PC exclusives. "We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy." He adds that "[games similar to Crysis] on console sell factors of 4-5 more."
Crysis sold about a million units worldwide in its first two months so it didn't exactly flop. Yerli does make a fair point, though. Had a game of Crysis's quality been released on Xbox 360 and PS3, they could've sold that many units in a week. It's not just a piracy issue, though. First-person shooters are just on console turf at this point. Let's not forget the steep hardware requirements of Crysis, either. To run Crysis, you need more than a newish PC - you need a PC that you've specifically crafted for gaming. Crytek aspired to make a great-looking game - and succeeded - but the effort sort of kneecapped their sales by limiting the market solely to hardcore gamers.
What about rumors that Crysis would eventually make it to consoles? Yerli stomps that out pretty quickly. "Crysis would have to be largely changed to bring it to Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. Crysis is designed to be PC Exclusive. Our internal focus is not linked to bring Crysis to consoles." Well, crap. At least console owners know they'll get their hands on Crysis 2 someday.
