Sony recently announced that it had shipped 50 million Playstation Portables worldwide. It's an impressive amount but it looks a little less so when compared to the total for its competitor, the Nintendo DS: 100 million.

Nintendo announced their handheld system's sales milestone in a press release this morning. Apparently they hit the 100 mil mark on March 6th. The DSi, the third version of the Nintendo DS which features built-in cameras, is already available in Japan and will be released in Australia, Europe, and North America in the first week of April.

The DS first launched on November 2004, about a month before the PSP's debut. Sales don't seem to be slowing down despite the fact that it's over four years old now. DS sales in January 2009 were in fact 99% higher than than they were in January 2008.
