Hellraid, the dark medieval game in development at Dead Island studio Techland, won't be out this year. The developer said today that they're planning a 2014 launch now.

"Since we started developing Hellraid we have had a clear goal to create a game that we all would love to play," Techland said. "We wanted to pay tribute to the best aspects of classic titles we grew up on and enhance them with new ideas, modern technology and extensive co-op that would provide players with dozens or even hundreds of hours of pure and bloody fun."

"If we released our game this year we would have to make too many compromises and the final product probably wouldn’t meet all our promises and your expectations. That’s why we’ve made a tough decision to release Hellraid in 2014 or to be more precise: when it’s done."

In Hellraid, up to four players team up to battle the forces of Hell with an array of spells and medieval weapons. The first-person dungeon crawler features randomized levels, enemies and loot. During co-op mode, players will attempt to outscore each other in order to earn rewards. The developers promised that the game could offer hundreds of hours of entertainment.

Techland says that the additional development time will allow them to create additional game modes for both solo and co-op players. The magic system is also going to be redesigned. The development team wants to make the spell selection more diverse and more visually impressive.

"We believe that with this decision Hellraid will deliver all that we’ve promised and even more. You’ll still be able to read about its development and see it for yourself on this blog. We also hope that you’ll keep supporting us just like you did so far with all your ideas and comments on the blog, in e-mails (we really have to answer them more often), on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the Steam Community Hub forum."

Hellraid was announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Though the game will launch after the Xbox One and PS4 are in stores, Techland hasn't expressed any desire to make next-gen versions.
