In the newest Deus Ex game, the world has been torn apart by a fear of something unusual; a fear of the Augs. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided takes place in a future where no one is safe, and the newest live-action trailer explains just how we got to that point. Check it out below.

There’s a chilling sort of familiarity in watching the live-action trailer as it describes the innovation of the augmentations to the way it tore apart humankind. In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the story takes place two years after the happenings in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, players take control of Adam Jensen who now has new augmentations on his body. It’s the year 2029 and those who have had body augmentations have succumbed to uncontrollable fits of violence. What most people don’t know is that the augmentations contain a type of special technology that allows the Illuminati to control them, and it just so happens that a rogue Illuminati member has gone off the rails to try and make the Augs look bad. On the other hand, Jensen is also chasing a terrorist group of augmented humans.

I always love when video games explore a story that takes place in the future. And so many that I’ve seen have made out the future to be filled with terror and chaos and a divided society. Take the upcoming Detroit: Become Human game coming from Beyond: Two Souls creator Quantic Dreams. Detroit describes a future in which humans and androids don’t mesh, and one droid decides to fight against the oppression. Especially with how chaotic the most recent presidential election has been, it’s no wonder people are steeped in thinking about and/or creating dark and nefarious predictions about our world in the future.
