GNi, Dolby Laboratories and Codemasters announced that they have partnered together to bring gamers a more “realistic” and immersive experience with the new Axon technology, which will greatly increase the audio experience for MMO gamers. The technology is already being implemented in Codemaster’s and Net Devil’s upcoming Jumpgate Evolution.
Hermann Peterscheck, Lead Producer on NetDevil’s upcoming MMO stated in the press release that…
“Voice chat is a critical feature for Jumpgate Evolution,” .. “After evaluating other products and considering building it ourselves, we determined Dolby Axon is the best solution in terms of value, ease of integration and audio quality.”
It’ll be interesting to hear how Jumpgate utilizes the technology given that it’s a space-combat MMO. It would be kind of neat to hear voices as if they were actually in the cockpit…it would be a complete nerdgasm for space-combat aficionados.
The tech isn’t just for vocal communication, though, it also enhances the audio aesthetics of teammate effects and noises that include footsteps, object movement and even enemy engagement. Matt Tullis, Senior Marketing Manager for Games at Dolby Laboratories commented in the press release, saying…
“Dolby Axon represents a new benchmark for online voice communications by enabling users to understand their in-game environment through audio. The reliability and scalability of GNi’s IaaS ensures a consistently immersive experience of our enhanced voice technology, which is vital to both the developers of virtual worlds and the people who inhabit them,”
