E3 2007: Hellboy Of A Game Comes To Xbox 360 And PS3

Ron Perlman's voice makes me wetter than a seal in a rainstorm. There, I said
it. So just imagine the Niagara Falls that ensued when I found out that Ron
Perlman would be putting the horn stumps back on for the PS3/XBOX 360
Hellboy: The Science of Evil. But not only is the 8' tall actor returning
for this one, but he's bringing Doug Jones (the body behind the Silver Surfer in
the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) and Selma Blair (the body
in front of that black dude who was slamming her in Storytelling) as they
return to the roles, respectively, of Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman.
Admittedly, watching Hellboy tear apart an enemy sideways would've been cooler
if Kratos hadn't done it two years ago in God of
War. That, in fact, may be the downfall of this game (or
hamartia for those of you who read Homer
to stop yourself from crying over how single you are before you go to bed): it
looks a bit too much like God of War. The
story, co-written by the creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, and the filmmaker who
did an amazing job of bringing Big Red to theaters, Guillermo del Toro, will most
likely be fantastic and cannot possibly be unfaithful to the Hellboy series. The
graphics don't look completely awful, but, right now, look like they're off a
PS2 version. In fact, I would believe it if someone just made a mistake and
the trailer is actually from the PSP version, due out around the same time as
the PS3 and 360's. Although it's a bit disappointing that the characters are
being done in neither the same style as Mignola's artwork (which was probably
the only good thing about the last time Hellboy played on a console) or the
recent animated Hellboy movie, Hellboy: Sword of Storms (pictured above).
However, the one thing this game will have that the
GOW series has yet to lay claim to could
easily make this game more than a Kratos clone. Namely, XBOX 360 and PS3 owners
will have a co-op mode that lets them and a friend relive the glory days of
Battletoads by fighting through the game together, with each player
getting to choose from "a number of characters from the Hellboy universe, each
with their own unique fighting style."
Graphics aside, I am already looking to forward to beating up Nazis alongside a
merman-like creature that can breath underwater--just like my grandfather used
to.
