Editorial: Fanboys Turning Into Fundamentalists, Who’s To Blame?Author: William Usher

When critics start getting fed up with the way the community is treating reviews for a particular game, it’s almost time to call it quits and find something else to do. The author of a rather evocative piece about the KillZone 2 review controversy, however, comes to the aid of reviewers who may be feeling the burn of the fundamentalist fanboy community.
Yes, if the last line didn’t bite enough I’ll repeat it: a part of the KillZone 2 following has turned fundamentalist. When did fandom stop being fun and start being religious? When reviewers were told that they weren’t doing their job by the fanboy community. As quoted from Only The Games regarding a commenter on the TVG review of KillZone 2, the poster says…“This review embodies the toxic, vile, cheap and nasty wh0re that the gaming media has become. yes, that’s right chris, you’re a wh0re, a nasty, vile, toxic and cheap WH0RE.” You know what the sad part about it is? KillZone 2 was scored 8 out of 10 on TVG. Chris Leyton is called a “whore” for giving the game an 8 out of 10? When did it become a crime to point out that a game has generic level-design? Last time I checked readers read a review to find out what the good and bad points of a game are. Even journalist who support these quasi-cults have banded against reviewers, such as PSX Extreme and an article that flames Edge for the ‘7’ they gave KillZone 2. Are you kidding me? So how is it that it’s no longer possible to even say anything unsupportive of the god-status to which certain games have been given by fanboys? Well, there is only one source to blame…the media. The fanboys looked for a reason to become fanatical and the gaming media gave them a reason. Yep, even here at Blend Games we took part in the over-hype that was KillZone 2’s road to ubiquity. All the screenshot comparisons, the previews, the lack of refraining from hyping the game’s graphics, etc., etc., helped fuel a snowball effect that has become uncontrollable. The fanatics who looked for KZ2 as the be-all of gaming fed off every comment, post, preview and article that glorified the game. Now reviewers are expected to follow-through with the rest of the glorification of KillZone 2 with perfect review scores – or so thinks the fanboys. As sad as this is, Only The Games points out a flaw within the gaming community that will happen again, and again, and again: Gaming journalists over-hyping a game and the cult gets angry when the reviews don’t deliver. Reviewers might as well expect the same treatment when God of War III reviews start rolling out and anything less than a ‘9’ is placed next to the game.
