This topic has been discussed many times in the past. Come to think of it, this topic never seems to fade from the spotlight when discussing Microsoft and Sony’s mammoth console machines, the Xbox 360 and PS3. What’s interesting about this topic is that a lot of people were quick to side in the way of the PlayStation 3 when it was first released as being “future proof”. The Xbox 360's multi-use of a standard DVD player with the option of attaching an external HD-DVD made it look like it was outdated before it was properly out of the gate. However, during these crucial times of the format wars (and the economy) Microsoft may have played it safe for future-proofing the Xbox 360 more than a lot of people think.
While the Sony PlayStation 3 may contain everything needed to spearhead the future of technological gaming on a home console, Microsoft has done something that may pay off in the long run: they kept it simple. The 360 comes in various forms, some with more or less gadgetry for the gamer who likes choice (or happens to be budget conscious). The PS3 also comes in two different iterations that have seen major upgrades within the last year of its release. On both sides there’s some major horsepower when it comes to processing, memory management and online functionality (for better or for worse *cough*PSN*cough*) And Sony ran a brazen risk with the inclusion of a Blu-Ray player in their PS3, which thankfully has paid off for them both on the gaming front and the multimedia front.
However, while both consoles seem ready for another five years of serviceable gaming and multimedia functionality, there’s the major question of how effective certain aspects of the hardware (in both consoles) will play out in the long run. For instance, the Xbox 360 is already receiving major heat for disc space limitations, while the PS3 is still suffering from framerate issues due to the lack of proper processing utilization. Now on the upside of this issue the PS3 will supposedly have better use made of its multiple SPUs in the next couple of years. The only problem is that around that time Microsoft will more than likely start getting ready to unveil their new console. Nevertheless, the very fact that within the next five years we will start seeing true potential from the PS3 does generalize it as hardware made for the future. It’s also hardware designed for gamers who are patient enough to wait for the real goodies in the years to come.
Sadly, the above description does not carry over quite as well for the Xbox 360 and its storage capacity, which is its main problem at the moment. Perhaps, though, that was the point all along.
While Microsoft abandoned a built-in HD-DVD and hard-disk from the outset for the 360, these accessories have become widely available as choice add-ons. In essence, this opens up a wide variety of options for Microsoft’s console, in spite of the fact that customers will have to upgrade their console to keep up with the times. There’s also Xbox Live, which plays a heavy part in custom content, and it easily works as a substitute for content that might otherwise get left on the cutting room floor. In a way Microsoft has cemented a future proof status within the Xbox 360's wide array of open-ended functionality. Giving consumers the option to add or take away as many hard-disks or attachable disk-drives gives MS the unique ability to possibly upgrade to Blu-Ray – or any other format of their choosing – via an external drive. Keep in mind, this can all be done without driving up the initial cost of the 360. On the downside this really does make Microsoft’s console look a lot like a maintenance-prone PC.
Although, as a gamer it’s probably disheartening to know that a console would require upgrading. At the same time, however, it’s probably also a little more comforting to know that the console will be around a little longer than expected. While the original Xbox was more future proofed than the PS2 by a long-shot, it was quickly abandoned by MS due to the cost of producing the unit with an included hard-drive. This is not to say that an optional hard-drive would have spared the original big black box from its early grave, but it appears to be working wonders for the Xbox 360.
I guess if you’re really concerned about buying a console that’s future-proof (or whether you bought a console and wonder if it is future proof), you might want consider two things: How long are you willing to wait for multiple good games to come out for it? And how much money are you willing to shell out over the course of the next couple of years to keep it updated? I guess the only real winners in this debate are those who are happy enough with consoles that are too old to be considered future proof.

So space is an issue for the Xbox 360? Why doesn't a person with Space issues just buy the optional hard drive you mention? 120GBs of space will sure clear up any issues they have, but you fail to mention this as an easy fix, and something someone could CHOOSE to do as opposed to having blu-ray rammed down their throat.
Also you mentioned: "How long are you willing to wait for multiple good games to come out for it?" But failed to mention that if you are going to be one of those people, that the Xbox 360 is by FAR the system you have been waiting for. This system has more higher rated games than PS3 and Wii's numbers combined AND DOUBLED! (according to Metacritic.com). It's just going to get better from here on out.
Space meaning the dvd9... Why no flack about bluray reading so slow that you cant game off of it? What good is size if its limp? Ohhhh thats so next gen a game machine who's drive is geared for movie playback :(
PS3 is the best value for money, it's as simple as that, better hardware, better franchises, Sony has more Studios making games for PS3 than X360 and Nintendo combined, so games won't be a problem (I believe this E3 2008 Sony will show three times more new games than Microsoft, and I mean Good games), it has the possibility to upgrade the HDD to ANY 2.5" SATA HDD, not some proprietary expensive shit, price will drop more, it has a Bluray player and FREE online service, that while not as good as XboxLive it's not as bad as people say, I play online games with no LAG at all, that's enough for me.
I can't see a single thing from X360 I wanted to have in my PS3, with the exception of 2 or 3 games, but knowing GTA4 runs better on PS3, and that triple A games are just around the corner I couldn't car less for some old triple A X360 had. By the way, I can play all that games on a PC...
PS3 is just... better value for money. While it's not the cheapest it is the more logical buy, the only logical buy. Why to buy a X360 if it will be a ping-pong ball from the costumer to the Microsoft support-service?
soo glad i brought a ps3 since launch date (uk) and have had no problems soo far. keep it up sony! btw u might wana check out the new slim ps3 which is coming out in august with a huge price cut
Oh yeah its going to get better...except gta IV looks and plays better on PS3, much like burnout paradise etc. Reason is xbox is at its limit and PS3 is just starting to show what it can do as programmers get their heads round it. Wii is doing very nicely with Mario kart, wii fit, galaxy etc and couple that with both companies selling millions of handhelds each and M$ is owned. Still after you've bought all the add ons to eek out another couple of months from 360 if it doesn't rrod on you you can look forward to saving for its next masterpiece due shortly after the next stockholder meeting. You obviously have a problem with blu ray I hope thats not because you invested in the M$ hd-dvd add on, ker-ching thank you sir may i have another.
Tell me everyone here - you enjoy having to pay $55 for a controller with Rumble? Oh . . . too bad, my rumble controller shipped with my Xbox.
Oh hey guys, tell me about your broken version of Orange Box, your broken version of Lost Planet, your broken version of Madden 2007, your broken and misunderstood game called Lair? Tell me about those?
How about playstation home? Oh wait . . .you got a couple more years before that will be ready.
How about Haze! hahaha Haze will be a joke of a game against Gears of War 2, haze will be as bad as Resistance 1 and 2 . . .
As Blu-ray, can no one see the writing on the wall? Optical discs are gone and dead in 4 or 5 years. BD will never replace DVDs in that time, therefore BD will be yet another huge embarrasing failure for Sony (lazer disc, Betamax). The future is downloadable movies instantly available - XBOX 360 will have this by the end of the year . . . PS3? noooo . . sorry, netflix CEO is not on the Sony board . . . nope, he's on the Microsoft Board.
you guys are classic - go check some review sites and see how poorly the PS3 does against even the Wii . . . haha I hate to have a console with games as crappy as the wii's games. Lair rocked though guys, it rocked! shake that controller!
I'll not waste my time much longer on this post - but comprehend this morons. The Xbox GTA 4 is forecasted to outsell the PS3 version 2 to 1. Not to mention last month's game sales for Xbox 360 included 5 Xbox games in the top ten . . . PoS3 had 1 game in the top ten.
I wonder if consumers and Developers pay attention to facts like that. I wonder, if they care about sales and money and stuff . . .
oh wait, yes they are. therefore all games will be made for the 360 first, and then ported to the PoS3.
OMG, are you serious, u just gunna come on here and start talkin fanboy shit?
first of all you point out that the PS3 doesnt have that many great games. that is a given considering its only been out for a year and a half.
then you make fun of one shitty game on it. and that we have to go out and buy the dualshock 3
resistance is bad? you should actually play it sometime.
Truth is, u can poke fun at the PS3 for having no games, and delaying games and all that shit all you want, cause it proly deserves it.
BUT!!....
there is so much more the PS3 has goin for it than the 360. the 360 is pretty much at its limits, and from the sounds of it, MS is tired of replacing all the units that die. let us not forget that the 360 is what made console failures a commonly known thing. so if you want i can go ahead and list all the reasons why the 360 shouldve never been.
whats that? you want me to go ahead? ok.
well lets see first off,
did you know that the average number of 360 consoles that consumers go through is 3? and its only been out for about 3 years!!!
50 extra dollars ontop of what we already pay for our DSL or whathave you for an online service that, while is prestine, is not worth the extra fee.
The greatest mulit-platform games are restricted due to being deveolped on the 360 first (GTA4) which is what this article is TRYING to say. lack of HDD on every console, and DVD format has restricted GTA4, which is from the mouths of the developers themselves, yes the PS3 may have caused a 6 month or so delay, but the PS3 version will be more polished, and from the sounds of it, a better experience. and why should MS brag about exclusive DLC when you STILL HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR IT. and im sure Rockstar will cook something up for the PS3 sooner or later anyway. seeing as how Playstation made them what they are today.
dont forget for an extra 50 dollars the PS3 gets what costs an extra 250 for the 360, wifi and HD dvd player, and your online service. so depending on what console you get, you can be paying somewhere between 5-700 dollars by the time its all said and done. so how does THAT feel?
oh, and when i want to upgrade my HDD i can do it with ANY laptop HDD, so when i fill up my 80 gig, i can go out and spend 140 dollars at newegg and get a 320gig. where you have to spend 100 on a 20 gig (ouch) or 200 for a 120 gig. and that is just wrong.
if you want to upgrade your headset for a wireless one, you will be automatically spending 60 bucks for the only one you can get, whereas you can buy ANY bluetooth headset for the PS3. which can range from 30-60 dollars.
so anyways, we can go on and on why which ever ones better, but it just depends on what you look at. and the lack of games excuse for the PS3 is out the window after this year, so i guess your gunna have to find something else. oh i know!! its heavier than the 360, oh but wait thats not gunna be true too much longer either!
So if you wanna just come onto a forum and start trying to point out the faults for your competeing system, thats fine, but dont be upset when we come back with twice the problems on your system.
The sooner that Devs stop making games on the xbox 2 first then port them to the ps3 the better, It's like confining a game size to a CD when you could have made it as large as a DVD, as it is a DVD to Blu-ray. For instance the new Metal Gear Solid - if it was created on the xbox 2 first it would either be made on atleast 5 or more xbox 2 DVDs, either that or it would be a much shorter game in every aspect technical, aswell as Enjoyment with lifespan being the biggest measure.
It's time Devs stopped moving backwards and moved to into the future by not creating anything for the Wii, and or porting to the ps3 from an outdated xbox 2 DVD drive.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!! Your as much a fanboy as all the other little fanboys...
@Jay
Haze is going to be the first game that will be streamed from a blu-ray disc. Once your in a game (Campaign) there isn't supposed to be any load screens between levels.
Just to input my two cents. I owned a PS2 and I am a PS3 owner and I am for 1 main reason. MS doesn't care about it's consumers. They just want your money and don't care so much if they leave some of you out in the cold. After all it was awefully nice of them to completely ditch the original X-Box once they release the 360. With the exception of the last 4 or 5 weeks the PS2 has been outselling the 360 and the PS3 has been outselling the 360 since before the holidays.
MS got a head start in this gen but the PS3 is catching up. The PS3 is selling just as well as the PS2 did when it was launched which is also better than the 360 has did when it was launched. Check VGChartz.com if you think I'm making this up.
I was just being sarcastic guys with my post (above). You don't really think I am stupid enough to think that the 360 can compete with the PS3's exclusive lineup, integrated Blu Ray player, free online service, and reliablility (I've had to send 4 xbox's back to MS so far). You see MS started 'nickel and diming' me as soon as I got my 360. First I needed a HDD to play online. That was $100 to MS (cha-ching). Then I needed rechargable batteries and a charger for the controller. That was another $30 to MS (Cha-ching). Then I decided that I wanted Wifi to reposition my 360 (away from an ethernet hookup). That was another $100. I figure I spent $700 or more on that piece of junk (counting $50 for the first year of Xbox live). Then it broke 4 times. Now I have a PS3 and I feel stupid for ever giving MS my money - Crooks!
What else can you say the xbox 2 has already reached the end of it's lifespan and it certainly is not future proof, either Microsoft will need to bring out yet another console including all the things they never wanted to include to save a few dollars (HDD,wifi, larger storage drive) to keep the xbox 2 alive. Or kill the xbox 2 and bring in the xbox 3, their next 3-4 year console meaning that they they go cheap again and leave out everything classified as 'futureproof' and continue making their consoles in China. Personally I want to see the end of xbox due to their 'RROD' I can only imagine that the next xbox 3 will also suffer some similar fate as the 'RROD'. although if the next xbox 3 has no problems then I have no problems with the xbox brand.
As to the add on HDD for the xbox 2, you can't expect or demand everyone buy one so this is why no xbox 2 games do or will benefit from partly installing on the HDD and reduce load times.
With this years sales of xbox 2 coming last in every region they will certainly have to bring out another xbox 2 model or rush out their xbox 3 to stay in the game, unless they are happy with last place hardware sales (week by week). Also their is a good thing with bringing a Microsoft out first being that Sony that comes out afterwards will be more technological and include everything that the xbox 3 did not.
Also does the xbox brand have any exclusive AAA titles which ARE NOT First Person Shooters, this is another thing the xbox lacks creativity. You cannot expect every type of gamer to be interested in FPS and basically stake your consoles future Solely on Halo and Gears of War games.
i've had all three systems. 360 died on my twice. dvd failure not rrod. third one was ok but louder than the first two.
during the 2nd 360 failure i bought a ps3 in november 2007. bought my second ps3 2 weeks ago. and plan to buy a third over the summer.
its the best all in one. i have an 80gb in my bedroom (upgraded to 120gb hd going higher soon). i have it on almost all the time. folding@home during work hours.
your right about alot of games wiht bad framerate on the ps3. those are games from companies like EA or low budget companies.
i play warhawk, resitance, uncharted, ut3, dmc4, heavenly sword, cod4, oblivion, motorstorm, burnout paradise, gt5 prologue, eye of judgment
all without a problem. not including all the games i have rented from gamefly. dark sector, condemned 2 etc.
and my ps2 games i still play, ffxi, ffx, ffxii, metal gear solid essentials, all the socoms, indigo prophecy.
with that out the way. the second ps3 is for my son. i have yellow dog linux installed on my ps3. once i get him an hdtv for his bedroom, i'm installing yellow dog on his ps3, removing his old crappy pc (he only needs access to surfing, wiki, youtube, instant messenger and a few mame games all doable from yellow dog linux on the ps3. so good bye pc, tube tv and computer desk. hello small tv stand with cable box and ps3 with wireless keyboard and mouse.
with a third ps3 in the living room in the summer thats, a gaming console, blu ra player, upconvert dvd player, media center that recieves my movie and music streams (which is how i watch majority of my movies).
price? when i bought my 360 it was $399. no wifi? the wii comes with wifi. if you look at the set up i want above, you'll see i dont want wires running through my house. that was another $100 for the 360 so thats $499. batteries? are you serious? $50 for play and charge. and another $50 for the ability to play people online which is a free feature added to the game. (yes i know xbox live has alot of benefits, its actually cool, not needed to charge me to play against someone thats just wrong) so total is close to $600.
when i bought the ps3 i bought nothing. its wireless and comes with a charging cable (short cable, stupid) free online. headset? came with a game. ps3 was $499 thats it.
jonathan mentioned choosing to upgrade to a getting a hard drive. good point. you can easily buy an hd for your 360 solving the space issue right? wrong. the dvd is still small. like houser from rockstar said, games are getting bigger not smaller. mlb 2k couldnt even hold all the stadiums and outfits on the 360 dvd you have to log on to live and download what couldnt fit on the dvd.
but lets go back to choosing to buy a hard drive. are you asking developers to choose which 360 owner to develop a game for? the restrictions are that not every 360 has a hard drive so hard driveless 360 owners get screwed with games that have to have a hard drive. like burnout paradise. no online for burnout paradise on 360's without a hard drive. xbox live experience like movies? no hard drive or small hard drive not happening for some.
so a developer has to say screw hard driveless 360 owners or make make games small for everyone.
you know what the 360 did right? marketing. people actually think its cheaper when its not. think its better when its just old technology so thats why its easy to develop for. its failure rate is atrocious. hard drive less in an xbox live DLC world LOL
like i said i bought the 360 first, the wii second and the ps3 last. i traded my 360 in for credit to buy a second ps3 and cant wait to buy another.
Whoever wrote this is smoking some serious weed there.
The PS3 is the one that's future-proof. MS has never been known for planning ahead with their consoles. Look what happened to the XBox-it died. The PS2 is STILL selling and games are STILL coming out for that. MS's problem is commitment.
i've had all three systems. 360 died on my twice. dvd failure not rrod. third one was ok but louder than the first two.

oh and dvd's dead? in 4-5 years? not likely. companies are having problems keeping up with bandwidth. only 65% of americans are online and only 45% of those are broadband. networks are getting slower with more video viewing and gaming. comcast is compressing broadcast to cope with bandwidth issues and timewarner and other companies are thinking about charging for bandwidth. comcast i think started to cap download. prices will get higher. companies will stop selling dvds and only sell blu ray. sharing is an issue. cant give the babysitter the copy of of your kids favorite movie you downloaded. hard media is still going to be relevent. the common person doesnt know how to plug in an hdmi cable. you expect them to upgrade hard drives, download content, stream it, convert it, distribute through their homes. enter credit card information when they could just buy the dvd? LOL
i like DLC too but its not taking over any time soon.
When I look at the specs comparitively between 360 and PS3 this analogy comes to mind.
PS3 is a Newly Designed Sports car and 360 is a SuperSport Muscle Car.
I say that because 360 has a really nice GPU with a turbo charge (on board Memory).
While the PS3's Chipset is built new from the ground up so to speak. From the Cell to the Blu Ray drive its got new Technology in it (except the GPU is the RSX slightly modified Video Card with no on board memory) .
360's Max power is easy to tap because its chipset is traditional.
PS3's Max power is going to take more time and effort to reach but will out do 360 in the end. This is a console with an 11 year support cycle and a futuristic chipset. Built on the Cutting edge trend of chip manufacturer's getting more power by making cpu's with many cores.
(they got to keep up with Moore's Law )
PS3 is doing devs a favor by getting them up to speed on programming for machines with alot of cores.
This kid Jonathan dares to call others fanboi when his comment is riddled with stupidity. I like how quickly your weak opinion quickly degraded into nothing more than simple minded fortune telling.
Keep preaching because your congregation will be moving on as soon as your precious box is dropped early yet again because Microsoft is more concerned about holding a top spot rather than providing their consumers with quality hardware.
jay your retarded the lens in the ps3 reads faster than 360. the only reason the games have a hard problem being read is because most of them are 360 imports. but if u play ps3 exclusives you will find they read a hell of alot better than the 360 exclusives. R-TARD
I see Sony’s viral marketing arm is at it again.
I have both consoles, and I'll only buy games for the Xbox; They run better (HL2, RS LV2, Dynasty Warriors etc), they have achievements, it’s got Xbox live (friends, voice chat blah blah blah), the controller is better - I could go on and on.
Sony has a lot of catching up to do. I'm not saying the PS3 will always be crap, I'm just saying right now it is. I’m not a fan boy, I'm a gamer - and I'll side with whoever provides the best gaming experience and at the end of the day, irrational loyalties aside, that is what it’s all about.
PS3 or Xbox 360 future proof, come on fellas, everybody knows nothing is future proof and with the rate of technology raising as it is now there will be the next big thing out. Microsoft and Wii are already talking about a new system in late 2010 from what I've heard. Just think what is going to come out then. Microsoft doesn't think anything is future proof and that is why they spend more money then Sony and Nintendo combine. And to think that the PS3 will all of a sudden look 10x better then what it does now is just stupid, I would guess it might improve over the future, but nothing to blow us away. Speaking of memory issues, didn't the makers of Asassins Creed say they were having memory issues with both consoles. To push something out in true 1080p fashion takes a lot of memory and that is why you won't see any cable station do so because it would jam the signal and that is why Metal Gear Solid might only run at 720p and only have the ability to upcode to 1080p, and this is what the maker of MGS4 stated. Nothing is future proof and with gaming growing as fast as it is now we all will be looking for the next big thing soon.
What I see now is that Sony is trailing bad, but there is no doubt they will make a push in a year or two. There is a saying that, "Potential will get you fired!."
The Wii is a Fab console that is off and running and there seems to be nothing gettting in it's way in terms of sales, but my concern is games and the life of the console.
The 360 is a game selling machine and has the install base to sell them. It has games out now and it has games in the future. And to think that it doesn't have games coming out in the future is just a funny joke. Game companies thinka about the future and Microsoft has given them a solid outlet to have a future.
@ Jonathan
home comes out dis fall ur ass jus pissed cuz u gotta pay 4 xbox live n we dont pay shit n we get home on top of dat
gears is da biggest piece of crap, all u do is take cover n shoot da whole damn time wit another predictable gay ass aliens have invaded storyline, atleast resistance has a unique storyline n insane weapons
n wat bout haze?? huh? dat game madd hot
n about blu ray... ur ass tryin to make a come bak from hd-dvd... jus lik b4 blu-ray is gonna kick ass
n about dat game sales crap..... let see if it look lik dat after mgs4 come out huh, or socom, resistance 2, killzone 2, littlebigplanet, teken 6, white knight chronicles, infamous, ect
OMG are your serious Johnathan, you pull the fanboi card, with your comments?!?!
Ok, so you can say the PS3 has absolutely no games. well thats somewhat true.
you can also say that most ports run like ass on PS3, that is also true.
and the fact that most games dont come out for a while on the PS3 due to extra develpment factors.
That is all true, but your STILL missing some major points and faults on your beloved 3shitty.
Ill go ahead and make a list of shit that bugs most people about the 360. then you counter with your excuses and what else you say is wrong with the PS3. OK ready, set GO!!!
1. First of all and most importantly of all, the 360 is an unreliable piece of hardware. Not only does the average consumer go through 3 in a year, the truly sad thing is, that most people that dont even usually play video games know about the infamous RROD. thats pretty sad. which is probably one of the major contributing factors to the Wii's success.
2. you say the PS3 is expensive? still? well ill show you a little comparisson, since ive had about 4 360s, and 1 PS3, i spent, on hardware alone, about 700 dollars, actually a little more, on the 360, whereas i only spent 500 on my PS3. The extra mulla for the wifi adapter, online service, external HD DVD player, made the 360 the more expensive console to own.
3. extra online fees. this drives me nuts, even though xbox live is a very good online service, i really do not like paying an extra 50 dollars a year on top of my 600 dollar anual DSL bill. (yes at 50 bucks a month, my DSL costs that much annually, do the Math) PS3 online service, which is lacking in comparisson, but improving greatly, is free.
4. HDD space. you say Digital downloads are the future? you may be right, but how much are you goin to spend on your 120 gig, or 20 gig HDDs? i personally know. i bout shit my pants when i had to spend 100 bucks on fuckin 20 gigs. and 200 on 120 gigs. whereas in my PS3 i spent 140 and got 320 gigs.
5. extra battery packs and chargers for the 360 are just insane, i would much rather spend 55 bucks on a dualshock 3 that i will never have to buy batteries for, and when (if ever) the internal battery goes bad, i can get a free replacemet, whereas i spent 60+ dollars on battery packs and chargers for my 4 360 controllers.
6. besides the infamous RROD, i know that another common problem, is the external power supply. which i had to get replaced 2x on my most recent 360.
7. Great games, Ex. GTA4, will not be as great because of multi-platform development. not every 360 has an HDD, and the DVD format has limited GTA4, Rockstars own words. From what ive seen so far, the PS3 version is actually superior in gameplay. like burnout paradise. All the extra fuss about the EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD CONTENT!!!!!! is pointless, your still goin to pay god knows how many extra xbox live points for that shit. and who says the PS3 wont get their version of exclusive stuff, not the same, but still exclusive. i dont think Rockstar is going to forget the company that got them where they are today.
i could go on, but im seriously tired of typing, and of being biased, i own both consoles, actually all 3, and i play my PS3 more, thanks to GT5, uncharted, Rachet and clank, resistance (which have you actually played this before you said its sucks, and Resistance 2 isnt out yet, so there is no way you can dis that game) the only thing i use my 360 for is gears. halo 3 was a HUGE disapointment, i totally lost all respect for halo after that game. a High-def game that only runs in 640p HAH! but you fanbois dont bring that up do you? so go ahead and make up a list that consists of more than "the PS3 is expensive der" or "it has no games depy der" cause those excuses are going to be out the window after the end of this year.
You're laughing at the fact that PS3 users have to buy a new controller?
Guess what?
From that $50 I save by not paying for Live, I can use it to buy a DualShock 3 and I only pay for it ONCE, while my online gaming remains subscription free and lagless on PSN.
If people claim downloadable games and movies are the future how much drive space would you need to hold a decent sized library? That seems crazy to me there's no way optical discs are on the way out. I mean games in future are supposed to be bigger, more detailed, and better in graphics. How the hell are you going to store that kind of a information on a hard drive let alone a library of games? That and people will still want to be able to trade, return, borrow physical media.
I think it's smart that Sony gambled on Blu-ray. It's the only disc format capable of taking game content to the next level. Atleast until super hard drives are invented.

U know, while you morons are arguing about the future prospects of the PS3 you are missing out on some of the best on-line gaming fun that a console can offer. The Xbox 360 is not a perfect machine. But it is the best gaming option at this time. I have had hours of fun playing games like Gears of War, COD4, Halo 3, Forza Motorsport 2. These games are brilliant in their execution and the best games I have played on a console so far! Now while you are sitting there holding onto your bitter loyalty you are nothing less than ripping yourself off by not experiencing the fun of these games. Its not about which console is better!!! Its about being able to own BOTH! If I cared about MGS4 or Final Fantasy I would buy a PS3 but I don't. Thats not to say they are not cool games! You all sound really bitter and the fact is that even though I have had an Xbox break down I still think it is the best gaming option at this time for the hardcore gamer. The PS3 exclusive titles out there AT THE MOMENT do not interest me and anything good is already available on Xbox.e.g. COD4 or GTA4. I never owned a Playstation I thought the graphics were crappy on release, even the PS2 was behind the eight ball graphically. I chose the N64 and Xbox 1 for their great graphics and better game options.
I have a question for PS3 owners. How long are you prepared to wait for this magical day when the PS3 hardware catches up? Just realise that while you are waiting for your expectations to be met. Thousands of Xbox360 owners every day are enjoying hours of top quality online play with the same graphics and sound as the PS3. I understand your feelings loyalty and hope. But you are misguided. If you really want to point the finger at people being tricked by marketing, look at the PS3 owner. They went and bought a console based on an idea. An idea that someday in the future it will deliver? While right now the Xbox360 has already delivered!
I own both consoles but i had my 360 long before (8months) my PS3.LOL!
360 fanboys can say all the positive features of the 360 until their eyes turn white or until pigs fly, which ever comes first. As a supporter of the 360 there is one issue that the 360 still have to face. This is the RROD!! i mean, what good are all these features ( xbox live, AAA games, "Gears of War 2".. Exclusives, etc. who cares!) when you can't even use any of them when your 360 feaks out and RROD flashes before your eyes.
you guys are so blinded by your own fanboism that you don't notice how MS is fu*ing consumers up the arse with these hardware failures. I know people who are in their 5th console already, while others are on their 4th console repair. MS should answer this problem first before even assuming they could get into a "Future Proof" debate. Freakin A! the freakin 360 isn't even "Today Proof"!LOL! what more Future! I myself am on my 2nd RROD repair in less than a month. Why not talk about "Quality Proofing" on the 360 before anything else.
It's funny how people forget to see the debate between 360/PS3 as something regarding a far future.
Man, the nbext generation begun in November 2005 and PS3 came one year later with an HW that, in the gaming area, is not stronger that Xbox360 one.
Yes, with BRay winning format wars, PS3 might be a "better multiuse-HW", but these should be mainly consoles.
Xbox360 and PS3 are not enought strong to be a competitive HW for many years, so we're talking about two machines that I hope won't be the top console offering after the end of 2010/begin of 2011.
Yes, they could last longer for the masses, but what is all this discussing about the future of things that should be in the middle of their life?
The poblem is only that PS3, superior in playing movies, came a year later in the market, came with an hardware not superior to 360 for games and came without games.
Still now is missing many AAA titles that we already had on 360.
If you want to play games I would immediately go 360, realying on many ALREADY RELEASED titiles, many exclusive coming, and many multi titles coming.
PS3 will have it's share of great exclusives but won't be more that 360 ones.
And will come later.
can u guys just shut up?
i am a xbox 360 owner, and i do not hate the ps3.From either party, you just stick with your console and shut it.Ps3 owners, go play your resistance and stuff.x360 owners,go back to your halo and stuff..puh-lease, like you are capable of changing the mind of a owner.. your just gonna start a fight.Back to burnout paradise, a multi-platform game... get it?
when the ps3 doesnt suck or gets fun games ill buy one, in the mean time my wii and 360 plus the great ps2 games still being released will keep me occupied. Well thats only if i dont die or something new comes out before ps3 devs learn how to utilize its hardware, or make a good game thats not final fantasy.
its true about a few games ps3 owners are missing out. but by your logic/argument. 360 owners are missing out on gaming as well.
i thought gears of war online was ehh, but gears of war as a whole is a great game. the co op play was very good. cod4 ps3 has that too, halo? eehhhh i'll stick with ut3, i played halo 3 and the campaign was pretty good but i find online to be fisher price my first shooter. forza 2 is a great game. no arguments there. and there are some other good xbox titles. but i found it not worth worrying about those titles the 360 hardware was enough to say fuck it.
but all those games you mentioned are shooters. how about just playing a good rpg, or adventure game? heavenly sword? while it has shooting uncharted is a great game too. resistance is alot better than people think. the campaign blows alot of other shooters away. i put gears and resistance online on the same level both were ehhhh
you want a shooter? play socom. i just started playing it again. and one thing that makes socom better than most games. you actually care if you live or die. if you die you have to wait till the match is over. unlike most 360 shooters. run, gun, die, spawn, wash rinse repeat.
its funny how many claim the ps3 doesnt have many games when they do. i play a ton of ps3 games, and thanks to gamefly i also play games not worth purchasing but playing on either system.
houser from gta mentioned that MS needs to get around the size issue cause games are getting larger not smaller. i'm sure there would be alot more they would like to add to gta4. i wonder how much of the gta DLC to come isnt partly stuff that wouldnt fit on the disc anyway.
ghostbuster devs announced recently that the 360 limitations are holding back the game in the sense of what they really want to do. to make it equall you have to go with the least powerful of the two.
games that have been better on the 360, are not better because the 360 is better. its because its the same last gen tech. just with a larger hard drive, faster proccessor, better graphics card. but nothing has changed. nothing new about it. so developers can develop the same game from 3 years ago only with better texture.
alot of these poor performing ps3 games are by companies not willing or able to afford the time and money to make next gen games.
and not all are worth it. madden 08? congrats you have a 60fps crappy game and ps3 has a 30fps crappy game. EA sucks. insomniac and naughty dog and criterion have proven great games can be made on ps3. anyone else is just lazy or poor
now when i got my 360 i thought it was cool. my first real online xbox live experience with all the features and DLC was marvel ultimate alliance. love that freaking game. and console for console i have to say the 360 is the best version.
my friend talked to me while i was playing another game.. nice.. we then jumped online via invites and got another friend in the game with ease.. nice. ... then after beating it, i bought the exclusive heroes and villains DLC pack. nice...
then it happened. my dvd drive started humming, 360 got loud and my dvd was beyond playable it was so badly scratched. your precious 3 year warranty if for rrod only so no special warranty for me, thank god i got store warranty.
by the way, this was 2 months after the 360 was bought.
then the same thing happened again. heating, dvd scratching etc. this was 3 months after the last replacement.
bought a ps3 during this time while i waited to get my 360 replaced.
i had the non hdmi 360. so i waited for the store to clear out their non hdmi stock so when i went for replacement i could get the hdmi port that should have been included in the first place. this one seemed more solid, didnt get hot as quick. cool..
whats that noise? mute the tv. sob its the 360. it doesnt get hot cause they must of put in a fan powered by a jet engine. the only game i could enjoy without that loud fan bothering me was forza 2.
stuck with the ps3 since then. while the ps3 does not have a solution atm like xbox live. i can still play online quite well. never have a problem getting online or finding a match for any online game.
the only thing i miss is in game xmb and ability to invite no matter what game i or others are playing.
other than that, knowing that i can watch a movie, then without turning it off play burnout or ut3 or cod4 for hours, then stream a movie, then fold@home while i go to the store and my ps3 is still cool and whisper quite.. is well worth not having the 360 anymore and having a few less games.
as far as future proof which is the topic. the 360 isnt really competing with the ps3. its more like it finally beat the ps2.
that is still in the market. if the ps2 can last 7-8 years +
longer life than both xbox's put together. imagine the life expectancy of the ps3.
by show of hands how many people are going to RUN and buy the new xbox?
how many are going to wait to see how their hardware holds up first?
by that time the ps3 will be beyond affordable. and developers will be better at developing.
I have both systems and at the moment I play with my Xbox 360 more and the only reason is because I have it modded. If it wasn't for that fact, I wouldn't have picked one up. I started playing GTA4 and I have to say that the controls on the PS3 is so much better. I'll be getting it for the PS3. xbox 360 controls are only good for fps.
Microsoft currently has bragging rights because they currently have better games. PS3 games are starting to get better since company's are starting to figure out how to develop games for them with the power of the ps3. since games are getting bigger and the storage space for the 360 games is just dvd9, some future games would have to be broken into multiple discs.
People complain about the price of the ps3 because they are ignorant and don't think about all the accessories you have to buy for the 360. it's good marketing because it's like how people are. we do the same things with credit cards and pay the minimum payment and end up paying more in the end. same thing goes for the 360, we end up paying more in the end.
Obviously, sony planned for the future by using bluray for their games. it cost more for sony to manufacture games on bluray and yet they cost the same as 360 games. doesn't that say something about MS. sony prepared well for the future and you'll see in a couple of years when microsoft needs to make a new console to compete.
Both are Shit in some ways and Good in Other ways. Why not just own both??? Stop complaining I have an XBOX 360, PC and a PS3 on the way, who cares it's just a console...
PC will always smash consoles...
Everything and everyone has their faults and achevements...
i know why all the sony fanboys are on here, they finished watching their bluraymovies, and sice there are really no games for it, they went online on their pc...fanboy losers waiting years for games....lmao
PoS3... i got one as a gift... it collects dust between the few movies i rent for it
You helped one person see the light, Im waiting untill the end of the year or maybe early next year to buy a ps3. Im somewhat holding out for a slim version or a good bundle, I feel as if my 360 is there to keep me occupied untill the ps3 gets rolling. It truly is next gen, the 360 is just what the xbox should have been.
