Editorial: Sony Could Be Holding Back Resistance 2's Success If you have paid attention to any of our editorials here at Blend Games since late 2006, you would have noticed a consistent disdain for a particular section of Sony’s business model: their video game marketing section. Sadly, these guys and gals have done very little to properly promote many of their own first-party games, and in result have managed to create a very sub-par community outside the initial fan-boy hype.

Like everyone else out on the net who have seen viral marketing videos for some of Sony’s exclusives, you sort of wonder why they stop there. In comparison, Microsoft has all sorts of ridiculous marketing ploys surrounding many of their first-party titles, leading up to the game’s release. In some cases MS will even continue to schedule events, make announcements and continue the viral marketing just past the game’s release, like what they did with Gears of War and Halo 3.

Even now, compare the likes of Gears of Wars 2 energy drinks, announcements for limited and collector's editions, as well as a vibrant promotional campaigns, to the simple techniques employed by Sony for Resistance 2. It is almost as if they expect the game to do well and that they should leave it alone, completely. It appears especially odd considering that gamers seem to be more enthusiastic for Resistance 2 than Sony does. Even sub-par games from Microsoft's first-party division seem to receive more attention and promotional efforts from MS than Sony's own triple-A game.

Last year there was an article by Stephen Tolilo that exemplifies an extreme case of lacking marketing support for an exclusive title. In this case, it was the lack of hype for Nintendo's own Battalion Wars 2. The company purposefully excluded the game from the press circles and the sale results outside of Japan, according VideoGamer.com, weren't even meager. In fact, Battalion Wars 2 failed to debut within the Top 40 for the month in which it was released. Now I am definitely not saying that Resistance 2 will debut in a 20th position among PS3-only titles, but what I am saying is that Sony could be missing out on a potentially ample opportunity for one of their exclusives. Resistance 2 could could be promoted to be a system seller like MGS4, yet it is not.

Now it is possible that Sony could be saving their marketing prowess for the likes of KillZone 2; a true triple-A title in the eyes of many gamers. The problem, however, is that KillZone 2 is not remotely close to being released. And at present, the PS3 is not only lacking mascot star-power, but it is also in dire need of exclusive titles to follow up the success of Metal Gear Solid 4. So while Resistance 2 will definitely move enough units to be considered a success by Insomniac and the general public, the lack of over-hype is doing a disservice to Sony's own PlayStation 3. As this is one of the few games that could be promoted to the point of which it compels gamers to buy a PS3 for the game. Sort of how MGS4 was over-hyped and promoted by Konami to purposefully shift PS3 units.

Sony's tactic instead - despite gamers seriously rallying behind Resistance 2 and its obvious rivalry with Gears of War 2 - is about doing the standard-fair job of getting Resistance 2 out there and leaving it. There's still close to two months before the game is officially going to hit store shelves. But in all honesty, if Sony has not given the game any sort of promotional campaigns to look like a system-seller, they aren't going to.

  • @Pidge:

Microsoft doesn't "own" Gears... Epic does. M$ is distributing the game, "exclusively", different contract and intellectual property (IP) concept. But you're right about Insomniac.

    @ Saint

LOL at your comment. It's an opinion, which is neither right nor wrong... but here's something. My Opinion is that Gears is simply a 3rd person Unreal with a cover system. Gears 2... doesn't look much better than Gears 1 and I hope they fix the frame rate and screen tear the first gears had. ;)
  • Resistance 2 is the poor man's Halo. The graphics is worse than last year's Halo 3 and lightyears behind the original Gears of War. The enemy types in Resistance are forced, they are not memorable in any way and do not have the personality and presence of the Covenant and the Locust. Sony obviously has conceded that there is no point using up their resources trying to promote a game that is going to be eclipsed and squashed by Gears of War 2.
  • @kaz

He mentions how "ridiculous" MS marketing as a figure of speech, simply telling you they put a lot into their ads.
  • mgs4 wasnt overhyped it was properly justified
  • i agree with this article. i think sony should be more involved with marketing this awesome game.
  • Microsoft owns Gears of War and Halo. Resistance is wholly owned by an independent studio Insomniac Games.

It's a slightly different working relationship, so there might be better comparisons than MS's two largest first party IP's.
  • I think that the autor has a point in his argument and personally think that the more promoted a product is the better it'll sell. But were missing the fact that Sony is fighting not only against a yrear of diference in the lonching of their system but also the entire US if u ask me. M$ its like another goverment for the US, I mean have you seen the amount of videogames comercials out there that anounce games that are multiplatform and yet at the end of the comercial they only show the 360 vertion of the games box. MTV preaty much worshipes M$ no matter what. I mean think about it.
  • OK you call the marketing MS is doing ridiculous, then you go on to complain Sony is not doing it as well? If it is ridiculous why would Sony want to advertise like that?

Your just another fanboy who is scared Sony and Resistance2 is going to get owned by GOW2 the same way GOW1 owned RFOM.

Im sure if Sony was using the exact same tactics MS uses to advertise you would be calling it good business sense instead of ridiculous.

We can see clean through you fanboys, even the "journalist" types, nice try though.
  • RES2 is gonna kick gears2 ASS all day long. Better gameplay, better weapons, MUCH better story, better multiplayer 8 player online CO-OP cant beat that mofo's!!!

Come on HALE lets KICK SOME ASS!!!!
  • Reporter? Yeah...

Perhaps it's the first paragraph that already leads me to think this will be a biased article. Gee, perhaps I'm not sure what "disdain" means. If you've been contemptuous of Sony's gaming division over the last two years, then I suppose it's not even worth attempting a comment. Ah, well. I'm bored.

I can understand that Sony would want to ratchet up LittleBigPlanet a lot more since it's a new IP. Resistance is an existing and venerable one and it will not be far off from getting good coverage through name.

Battalion Wars 2. Ah. Seriously poor example. If it wasn't even part of a marketing strategy, why even mention it? It gives nothing to the article.

Either way, I suppose the rigid structure of Sony can be faulted but I wouldn't say they're doing such a bad job of marketing the game. Microsoft's marketing push with GeoW and Halo 3 were otherworldly and I hope to god that such a travesty never happens again (oh, it will, sadly). They have deeper pockets and they were keen to get ahead. If anything, Sony haven't professed such a hunger yet (a shame), but they've been playing quite well.

Perhaps this article goes to show that MS really intended that everyone remember Halo 3's marketing campaign more than the rather forgettable game itself.

And seriously, I'm hardly excited about Resistance. I'm inevitably waiting that you go into ultra-defensive mode and then say that I'm either an Xbot or a Sony fanboy. I'm neither, fyi.

Now, is there a way of UNsharing articles so others will not lose about 5 precious minutes of their lives...
  • Sony is doing fine in promoting Resistance 2. This game was one of the highlights at the E3. There's also complete coverage on the progress for RE2 in QORE. Sony's PR usually mentions about RE2. Sony didn't go out of their way in making energy drinks or anything like that and this game doesn't have a huge fanbase like MGS 4 so it's understandable there's no SE PS3 version out there with RE2.

Also Gears of War the movie is coming out which probably explains all the promotion going on.
  • Wether Sony is doing -enough- will be left to be commented after Xmas 08, but you must live under a rock if you haven't seen the Marketing campaign behind RE2 or, even better (or worse depending on your take on advertising), LBP.

Heck, associating Katee Sackhoff to the pre-launch viral Marketing campaign, and distributing flyers about those websites at the Comicon 08 and the BSG pannel was pure genius.

Next to that, MS has done its usual and very predictable job of marketing to the same populace of jock-type, Xtreme sport TV addict, Red Bull drinker population that it has done since Halo started.

You must also have missed the round of playtesting 2 days aggo with most big gaming sites, who all reported that they were wowed by Re2 (screenshots and video a plenty), calling it a "Halo killer" or a "System Killer"... ??

I am no big gamer by any stretch and do not go regularly on any console gaming website (I am more of a PC gamer), but I have heard plenty about RE2, and little about Geow2 frankly.
Let's not even mention LBP, which looks to be fantastic, and is being promoted like crazy :)
  • I agree with this,

I think the author should shoot Ted Price CEO of Insomniac a email with a link to this article.
  • Mourne, you missed the point and managed to file yourself into the categorical fan-boy slot, fitting perfectly into context with the very first paragraph of the editorial.

I never stated that there was not a limited/collector's edition of Resistance 2, as just about every game that steps above the triple-A status will receive a limited/collector's edition.

My point explicitly states that outside the fan-boy community, gamers (casual or otherwise) aren't going to be going gaga over R2 the way non-Halo fans did with Halo 3 and Gears of War. What I'm saying is that Sony hasn't marketed Resistance 2 enough to have a lasting impression on mainstream media the way Microsoft has done with some of their franchises.

  • Ok, no offense, but it appears that all you KNOW about, is the marketing campaign for GeoW2. However, as someone who's been actively involved in the campaign for Res 2, I can tell you it has me thoroughly excited, as well as a large majority of the PS3 owning populace. Their night-time phone calls, urging us to help a doctor choose which soldiers live and die. The videos of the virus injections etc... They've got me glued to this game like stink on $hit.

Additionally, there IS a Resistance 2 Collectors edition...I know, because it pre-ordered. So, it would seem that it's not Sony, that's holding back Res 2's success, but rather, ill-informed, biased or otherwise out-of-the-know reporters, such as yourself.
