Elder Scrolls MMO In Development?
Zenimax Online Studios, sister company to Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls developer Bethesda Softworks, is looking for a few good men and women. According to an official announcement today, they're staffing up to create "a world class MMOG."
What kind of MMO could it be? We know that it's at least not a Fallout MMO. Though Interplay sold the rights to the single-player franchise to Bethesda, they retained the rights to create an MMORPG based on the property.
Given the competitive MMO market and the high costs associated with launching one of those games, though, it seems likely that Zenimax would stick with an established franchise. Why not an MMORPG based on Elder Scrolls, then? Bethesda made several single-player installments in that series so they've already got the geography and lore pinned down. More importantly, Elder Scrolls has a big fan base which could lead to a lot of pre-release buzz for the game and a high initial subscriber base.
No specifics about the project are confirmed in the press release. It's not hard to imagine Zenimax dipping into the Elder Scrolls well, is all. On the other hand, is there enough room in the MMORPG market for another medieval fantasy game?
