Epic Games Helps Korea Upgrade MMOs With New Studio
If there is one thing South-Korean game developers are known for it is massive-multiplayer online games. While it was once a standard to keep their games limited to RPGs, recently they have branched out to whole new concepts of online gaming that include third-person shooters, first-person shooters and even mixed-breed MMOs that span the likes of several genres.
Well, one North American-based company is looking to further tap the illustrious Korean game development scene and it happens to be the makers of Unreal. Yep, Epic recently announced that they will be helping support Korean game development with further support of the Unreal Engine 3 by opening a Korean-based game studio called Epic Games Korea. Hopefully this means that maybe we’ll finally get that Gears of War MMO we’ve all been waiting for.
“We deeply value our customers, and we are committed to providing Korean game developers with outstanding technology and tools,” said Park. “The opening of Epic Games Korea signifies Epic’s desire to collaborate more closely with the Korean game development community, as we view our licensees’ successes as our own.”
While the company has been supporting and supplying development and resources for Korean-based software companies, this next step signifies a leap for Epic to focus some efforts solely on the Korean development market. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m highly interested in what sort of projects will come out of the studio.
“Epic has been providing Unreal Engine technology to the Korean market for over five years, with the simple goal of helping our customers make better games,” said Wilbur. “We are now expanding our commitment to the Korean game industry by opening a local subsidiary, hosting a third of our global licensing resources, to serve as a hub for Unreal Engine access, knowledge and support in the Korean marketplace.”
