PS3 owners were jazzed to learn that a demo for Final Fantasy XIII would be included on the Blu-ray disc of the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete. You may not have to buy the film to get the demo though - you can just buy the demo. Wait, what?
According to FinalFantasyXIII.net, Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura told Japanese publication Dengeki that the FFXIII demo could be sold separately sometime after Advent Children Complete's release. To give you a sense of when this would happen, FF7: ACC isn't due until March of 2009 - and that's all in Japan. Which gives us plenty of time to discuss the following topic: "Paying for a demo? What the hell?"
It's nice that you won't be forced to buy a film to get the demo but still. Demos are one of the few pieces of content you don't have to pay for these days. Sure, gamers regularly shell out money for additional gameplay content but that content is for games they've already purchased. The whole point of a demo is that you get to try the game before you buy it. Lest you think Square is just being greedy, there's an alternate explanation for this: Supposedly the demo will be ninety minutes long and would be too large to fit on PSN.
Whatever Square Enix's motives, I'm just afraid demos will all start to be premium content. If game companies began charging five bucks for their demos, gamers would probably cave. Many Final Fantasy fans would gladly fork over money to get their hands on a taste of the next installment in the series and I don't think that's different for the fan bases of most other franchises. Whether the demo is worth it or not, it's never fun to have to pay for something that used to be free.
