Today Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is making its debut on the PS4. Any PS4 owner can download the beta version of the game through the PlayStation Store.
The PS4 version of Final Fantasy XIV features upgraded 1080p visuals and can render more characters on screen. It supports the touchpad for the DualShock 4 as well as the Share button. The latter allows you to easily broadcast gameplay or screenshots. Mouse and keyboard controls are supported to make the transition to PS4 easier for PC gamers. You can also play the game on PS Vita thanks to Remote Play.
This first phase of beta testing will run from today to March 3rd. Even if you played the PC or PS3 version of FF14, you'll need to create a character from scratch for this beta. Don't get too attached to this new character because it's going to be wiped at the close of Phase 1.
Phase 2 will be held from April 4th to April 7th. Characters created in this phase will carry over into the full version. You can also import existing characters from other versions into this beta. Importing won't be needed after the beta, because players on all platforms will share servers.
If you've been playing the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV, you'll be able to upgrade to the PS4 version for no additional charge on April 11th. This migration has some restrictions, though.
"Please be aware that after transferring to the PS4 you’ll be unable to play the PS3 version using your existing copy," Square Enix community project manager Hergen Thaens said on PlayStation Blog earlier this month. "Users who wish to play using both the PS3 and PS4 are required to purchase the PS4 version separately. Users who own multiple service accounts for the PS3 can transfer all accounts to the PS4. Users transferring their accounts will have access during the early access period, scheduled from April 11th to the 13th. Please note: to transfer your PS3 account, you must have logged into it from a PS3 at least once."
FF14 will officially launch on the PS4 on April 14th. Before you spend any money on it, be sure to check out William's impressions on the game.
