Former Naughty Dogs Put Their Steel Penny On WiiWare Steel Penny Games, the independent development studio founded by former Naughty Dog veterans Jason Hughes and Andrew Gilmour, have announced their acceptance to the WiiWare developer’s stable. In the announcement, the company mentions that their first game will be an original IP title set to release in mid-2008.

The upcoming title blends a challenging puzzle game with a dramatic fantasy environment and appealing character for an exceptionally satisfying experience. At least, that's what the press release says. There were no details released showcasing any aspect of the game, leaving the intricacies left to the imagination. I would like to take this moment to share with you my thoughts on their first title, WiiWare or otherwise.

In December, Steel Penny Games announced they were going to focus on a new 'prototype' that involved their characters Bruiser and Scratch. The original expectations for friends Bruiser, a burly mutt, and Scratch, a plump kitty with purple fur, were scrapped due to their adventure being "too big". In response, the company would be putting the game on hold for a later date, and would instead scale back the scope of the original and create a smaller game for digital distribution.

The new game would be called Bruiser and Scratch in [the] Case of the Puzzling Paw. From the game’s description, "Introducing Bruiser and Scratch: a lovable pair of furry friends that are somehow always in the thick of it. One fine day, when enjoying a stroll in the woods behind their neighborhood, Scratch spies a strange marking on the ground. It looks like... an incredibly large paw! Unbelievable. Just as she calls Bruiser over to investigate, a thin vapor crawls up from the earth and begins to solidify into a strange doorway with markings all around the edges. A doorway…to what? Before she could utter her surprise, the great oaf, Bruiser trips and both go tumbling headlong through into the space unknown beyond the creepy portal."

That sounds suspiciously like a challenging puzzle game set in a dramatic fantasy environment. Only time will tell, but I currently feel comfortable telling you to keep an eye out for Steel Penny Games' first release, Bruiser and Scratch in [the] Case of the Puzzling Paw.
