Free Radical Lays Off Employees, Looking For BuyerAuthor: Pete Haas

UK developer Free Radical Design, best known for the first-person shooter series TimeSplitters, is the latest casualty of the crappy economy. They've fired a massive amount of employees and are now looking for some richer company to come and sweep them off their feet.
Cameron Gunn of ReSolve Partners, the firm that's stepped in to help with the company's, erm, "transition", gave 1UP the details: "We made around 140 employees redundant yesterday, effective 31 December (the date up to which they had been paid). We're still trading on with the remaining 40 or so employees, have advertised the business for sale and have received some strong interest." Gunn wouldn't reveal the names of interested buyers. They've had games published by Eidos, Ubisoft, and EA in the past so those names will obviously be tossed about. EA's making some cuts of their own which would indicate they're not looking to throw cash around. You could also interpret their studio closures as an effort to clear some room in the stable for a new acquisition like Free Radical, though. |
