Full-Body Gaming Coming To Replace Wii-Moting

published: 2009-03-24 12:02:19
Everyone was all enthralled and elated over the opportunity to play games using motion-sensing technology with the Wii and the whole Wii-mote/Nunchuk gig. That’s fine and dandy, but Softkinetic is looking to pwn (and that means “own” for non-core gamers) the motion-sensing arena with iisu and the new Full Body Avatar Control system.

“The world’s largest media and entertainment companies have already embraced our technology, and have helped us refine our understanding of the requirements for realistic polygonal avatar control system,” said Michel Tombroff, CEO of Softkinetic. “Our team is driving the industry and we are confident that it represents the most advanced 3D camera-based avatar animation solution available on the market today.”

It’s kind of cool that this new Full Body Avatar Control will work in conjunction with the iisu middleware, motion-sensing platform and offer developers the opportunity to make avatars in complete 3D environments for interaction and movement. In other words, this isn’t software technology that’ll see gamers busting bubbles or punching bricks with two-dimensional motion-sensing that you find with Sony’s Eye-Toy.

This middleware-suite actually offers developers the option to make avatar-based games that sees players controlling movements with their own body. In even more words, newer Tekken, Street Fighter, Gears of War, God of War and Grand Theft Auto games that utilize this technology will never be the same again.

Tombroff added the following statements, “We strongly believe that the video game industry will embrace 3D gesture recognition technology in 2009, and we believe the first games will hit the market as soon as 2010.”
