G.I. Joe: Special Ops Coming This June To Multiple Platforms
An arena-based action version of G.I. Joe is arriving this summer, first via Facebook and the Syfy Games portal and then later to multiple platforms thereafter. The game will enable players to either choose to play as the Joe elites or as the Cobra forces.
Dave Howe, President of Syfy commented in the press release, saying...
“The G.I. JOE brand holds a special place in fans’ hearts, and we’re delighted to offer both those long-time fans and new players an action-packed gaming experience in a fresh and exciting way. Since we launched our social game platform, nearly 90% of our players are male, compared to the typical social game audience which skews female. With G.I. Joe: Special Ops, we will build upon this early momentum and significantly expand our audience to reach that underserved male social gamer and deliver them the best social games around.”
The developers from BattleStar Galactica Online, Artplant, will be at the helm of the new action-based arena title, giving gamers the same kind of quality you encountered in BigPoint's browser-based MMO.
Under the license agreement Syfy has the opportunity to expand on the G.I. Joe franchise and adapt their own spin to the classic, action-based brand. The game itself offers up a couple of classic characters to boot, including FireFly, Destro and Baronness on Cobra's side, and Jinx, Low-Light and Flint. Each side will also receive their own cache of vehicles as well so players can take to the ground and air to dish out massive damage to opposing forces.
Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President of digital marketing, Hasbro, also shared his thoughts about the new game, saying...
“As a global leader in branded play and gaming, Hasbro is thrilled to be working with Syfy Games to deliver the G.I. Joe: Special Ops social game for Facebook,” .... “The epic G.I. JOE vs. COBRA saga is a perfect fit for this gaming platform and we’re excited to deliver our classic characters such as SNAKE EYES and COBRA COMMANDER to fans in this new format.”
The game has a series of open slots on its website, indicating that additional vehicles and characters for both the Joes and Cobra will be unlocked or added at a later date. You can look for the game to make its initial launch on Facebook and the Syfy games network this June, and it may spread to additional platforms later in the year.
