Zombies are the new space marines. Valve's Michael Booth revealed in a GDC presentation on Thursday that the PC and Xbox 360 versions of zombie co-op shooter Left 4 Dead have sold a combined 2.5 million copies at retail since its release in November 2008.

The real total is probably a great deal larger than that, as it doesn't factor in sales from Steam, Valve's digital distribution service. Valve hasn't revealed how many digital copies of the game were sold but they've probably racked up respectable numbers - especially with that recent 50% discount.

Sales for L4D should get another bounce when Valve releases the Critic's Choice Edition for the Xbox 360 on April 21st. The Critic's Choice Edition comes with the normal game as well as the free downloadable content that will be released for the Xbox 360 and PC versions.
