GTA: Chinatown Wars Sells Only 89KAuthor: Pete Haas

Rockstar Games took a gamble by releasing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the traditionally family-friendly DS and the move hasn't paid off so far. Despite stellar reviews, the game sold only 89,000 copies in the US in its first month.
Business Insider notes that analysts had projected sales between 200,000 and 450,000 for March. Chinatown Wars was released on March 17th so we're only looking at half a month of sales. Still, considering the tremendous sales of recent console installments of GTA, this has to be a bit of a disappointment for Take-Two. The low sales can probably be attributed to the young user base of the DS and/or the sagging economy (sales were down 17% this month). It's certainly not a reflection on the quality of the game. With a Metacritic score of 94, it's currently the highest rated game on the DS of all time. We liked it a whole lot, too. |
