GTA TV, Rockstar TV Trademarked
Rockstar Games' parent Take-Two Interactive filed a couple interesting trademark applications recently. They've laid claim to the phrases "GTA TV" and "Rockstar TV," suggesting that the Grand Theft Auto developer has a new entertainment venture in the works.
The trademarks will apply to the following products: "Active computer game programs and software; animated motion picture films featuring entertainment, namely, action, adventure, dramatic, comedic, children's and documentary themes; pre-recorded video discs and other pre-recorded digital and electronic media in the field of live action programs, motion pictures, or animation featuring entertainment, namely, action, adventure, dramatic, comedic, children's and documentary themes."
As OXM points out, recent Grand Theft Auto entries have featured in-game television and radio shows as well as parody websites. Perhaps Rockstar plans to add this type of original content to GTA V on a normal basis?
It's also possible that this Rockstar TV or GTA TV is simply a new platform for the mock TV shows and movies. You had to sit around in your character's apartment in order to watch this video content, which is a bit awkward. Most people would rather be out causing havoc in the streets than sitting around on a virtual couch. Rockstar TV/GTA TV could be a way for gamers to experience this content when they're away from the game. An iPhone app would be welcome.
It might be awhile before we find out what exactly Rockstar is planning, especially if this TV project is in fact tied to GTA V. They said recently that they're months away from releasing new details on that game.
