GameStop, the largest game retailer in North America, is making a move toward digital distribution. They plan to offer downloadable content for games through their stores soon.
Reuters states that GameStop will sell game add-ons like new maps or characters. Presumably they'll sell vouchers with download codes that you can then punch into your Xbox 360 or PS3. GameStop will begin testing this program out in early 2010. "A large market for full game downloads is not imminent, (but) the add-on downloadable market will grow," said GameStop COO Paul Raines at the BMO Capital Management Digital Entertainment conference. In August, GameStop appointed Chris Petrovic to the newly created post of General Manager, Digital Media. He is tasked with creating a "smart digital business platform" and this is apparently the first step in that. |
