House of Cards is arguably the project that put Netflix on the map when it comes to original series, as it brought a star-studded cast together for a thrilling political drama that could be binge-watched to subscribers' hearts' delight. Netflix might not be the giant of original programming that it is today if not for the wild success of House of Cards when it debuted back in 2013 with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright in the lead roles. Now, word has come down that House of Cards will come to an end.

The good news for fans is that House of Cards hasn't already aired its last episode, as sometimes happens with series' cancellations. The show won't come to an end until after the upcoming sixth season, which THR reports is currently in production. The show has gone through a lot of changes over the years, and it should be interesting to see how things come to an end. That said, it may not come as a huge surprise to fans that House of Cards will end after Season 6.

There have been some major behind-the scenes changes in recent years, as showrunner and creator Beau Willimon departed House of Cards after the fourth season. He was replaced by Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese, and while there weren't too many drastic changes to the series, it may have been a sign that the stories of the saga were winding down. Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese are both expected to return to their roles as showrunners for the sixth and final season.

There's also the fact that the news of the cancellation comes shortly after Rent and Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp came forward with allegations that Kevin Spacey had made sexual advances toward him when he was just a 14-year-old boy back in 1986. Spacey was 26 at the time. Kevin Spacey responded by stating that he does not remember any such "encounter" and then coming out and saying that he chooses "now to live as a gay man." It's not clear at this point what will or will not come out of Rapp's allegation.

All five current seasons are available streaming on Netflix now if you want to check them out and/or rewatch ahead of Season 6. No official premiere date has been set for Season 6 at this point, although it is expected to debut at some point in 2018. There are still plenty more Netflix originals ongoing and in production, and the recent release of Stranger Things has subscribers everywhere excited.
