The release date for the Nintendo DS remake of classic arcade Gauntlet has been hard to pin down but now we at least know the month. Eidos has confirmed that it will arrive in stores in October.
Gauntlet debuted in arcades in 1985 and some of you younger folks might not have played it or any of the ports. It's a top-down game in which you control one of four player classes (warrior, elf, valkyrie, wizard) and traverse level after level of a dungeon. While fending off creatures and collecting treasure, you'll also have to keep an eye out for food - if you go too long without a bite to eat, you'll die. If you've ever seen a person with a "red warrior needs food badly!" forum sig, this is the game they're referencing.
The DS version, developed by Backbone Entertainment, will have a new 3D graphics engine, multiplayer support, and voice chat via the DS microphone. Over wireless and Nintendo Wi-Fi you can play cooperatively or competitively with up to three other players. All in all, the game will have forty cooperative/single-player maps and sixteen multiplayer maps.
