The long-running rumor that Brother in Arms developer Gearbox Software is developing a new Halo game is finally dead. The rumor was killed by, of all things, a 13-word Twitter post.

"For the record, Gearbox is NOT working on a Halo title for Microsoft," read an update on the HaloWayPoint Twitter. Joystiq contacted Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb and he confirmed that this is a legit Microsoft Twitter account.

Halo creators Bungie will be moving onto a new IP once they finish up Halo: Reach next year. This year Microsoft created a new internal division called 343 Industries to publish future Halo games and oversee all other off-shoot products like the upcoming anime Halo: Legends. The mystery of who's going to be the new developer continues, though.
