So the first gameplay video for Gears of War 2 has finally come and gone. And if you’re like me you are indeed looking forward to the game, but once again find the overall Gears experience to be lacking. For all the hype and fan following of the first title perhaps I was expecting some magic in this video. Instead it looked exactly like what I think Gears of War 2 should. Same visual style, Locust Horde being chainsawed in half and a few new additions. Nothing that was mind blowing or of any particular interest.
The most exciting part – at least for 360 players – is the definite confirmation of Brumak battle. That fight at the end of the video is the best thing, as long as it turns out to be as epic as it looks. Other than that this is a lot more of the same. Which is not a bad thing, because GoW was enjoyable for what it was. I’d be far more interested in them fleshing out the story though. Perhaps giving us a better context for the characters that surround Marcus and the rest of the COG; while we’re at it let’s explore his tale a bit.
There is certainly subtext within Gears of War that never got explored, and the sequel is a perfect opportunity to make the game bigger and more bad ass than ever. This includes doing more than making me tap the “B” button to win a chainsaw duel.
The first gameplay video is below for you to enjoy.
