With the new Indiana Jones movie set to be released this week, this seems like an appropriate announcement: Polish developer Gingerbread Studios has revealed that it's currently working on a new action game called The Protector in which a British mercenary and American archaeologist team up to recover Mayan artifacts.
There's a catch, of course - the artifacts are also coveted by a group of terrorists who want to use them to destroy the world. The gameplay changes depending on which character you're currently playing as. Archaeologist Jennifer Guile relies on stealth while mercenary Jonathan Kane shoots lots of people.
The premise of a stealthy gal and a trigger-happy guy teaming up to kill terrorists (and shacking up in the process, no doubt) reminds me of an action currently being developed over in Germany, Shadow Harvest. It's unclear if Protector will have these two characters working in tandem (as seems to be the case with Harvest) or if the game is split up into separate solo phases. I'm curious if each game uses the same basic technology as well.
Both games are being developed for Xbox 360 and PC so I'm sure this won't be the last time they'll be compared side-by-side. Harvest is due in the first quarter of 2009 but no release date has been announced for The Protector yet.
