I’ll be the first to tell anyone that BioShock had a great narrative, and in the right hands could make a wonderful translation to film. Simultaneously I’d say it should never be attempted, because I have lost all faith in Hollywood’s ability to treat video game source material with anything but condemnation. Universal and Take Two Interactive seem to think that Pirates director Gore Verbinski should return to the oceans and take on BioShock’s movie adaptation as director and producer.
Verbinski, you may remember, spoke at this year’s DICE summit, where he praised BioShock’s story. He called Ken Levine’s underwater failed utopia tale a ”really strong narrative.” If anyone is going to jump on board to get BioShock the movie made I think Verbinski’s the guy. As long as the integrity of the story is paramount, and there’s none of Joe Topper syndrome that plagued the Pirates sequels.
