Green Day: Rock Band, the spin-off announced at the Spike Video Game Awards, will not be developed by RB series creators Harmonix. Instead, it looks like they're farming out the game to another studio.

"Not included in the announcement was the fact that Demiurge Studios was working on Green Day: Rock Band," blogged Demiurge's Adam Rosenfield (via superannuation). "And I gotta say, it’s pretty freakin’ awesome working on it. I’d love to tell you more, but NDAs, yada yada yada, so I can’t say much else."

Demiurge previously created the Rock Band Country Track Pack and Rock Band: Metal Track Pack so they've got some experience with the series. Generally Harmonix develops the PS3/Xbox 360 iterations of RB and brings in other devs to do the Wii/handheld versions. It's not clear if they're completely removed from the development of GD:RB. If so, what are they working on now instead? Rock Band 3?

Update: Harmonix contacted us to say that they are developing GB:RB in partnership with other studios.
