When the grapple starts you'll have a circular prompt appear showing you four directions. Now this confuses a ton of people and it confused the heck out of me, even after watching EA's grapple tutorial video.

Basically, when applying a submission just follow the on-screen prompts. It's just like playing Dance, Dance Revolution, except you hold the right analog in the direction of the screen prompt and you keep it there. A left analog prompt will flash on the screen and rumble the controller briefly. You must quickly tap the left analog position while still holding the right analog in prompted position.

Once you complete the multiple stages of the submission and the little bar shows 100% then you'll submit your opponent. It's easy to submit an opponent on a weakened body part or when their stamina is drained.

On the flip-side, when you find yourself on your back just remember to keep calm.

I lost a dozen or so fights just because I would get slammed, run out of stamina, get punched in the face and either get KO'd or have the AI submit me like a noob, even after I had been dominating most of the fight.

Again, the most important part is to stay calm. Most of your control will be from the right analog. Just take a few moments for your stamina to recover to full and then rotate the right analog stick left or right. That's it. You'll begin to reposition from on the ground. Continue this motion – rotating left or right – until you eventually flip your opponent and you get the mount. It's that easy.

Alternatively, you can keep clicking in the left analog button until you push away or kick out of the ground grapple. This is the easiest and best way to get out of a tight spot, especially if you were already rocked by a knockdown.

If you can't escape from the ground or reposition yourself before an opponent locks on a submission, don't worry. Remember, the quickest way to lose is to panic.

Once they synch in a submission just move the right analog to various positions until you find one that moves to the farthest most outer edge. The father outside the circle the button prompt goes the quicker you are to escape. The best thing to do is to trick your opponent when the left stick prompt appears by moving quickly to a different position and attempt to escape.

Stamina and body damage will of course play a factor in this, and the more you wiggle around the right analog the more stamina you'll expend. So move wisely and try to find one of the four directional walls that you can easily escape from.

Once you get the basics down it's a lot easier to perform the necessary moves to get your opponent on the ground, or to escape from submissions while on the ground. There are way more advanced techniques than this, but this is about the easiest way to make use of some of the clinch, grapple and submission game in EA Sports UFC.
