April Fools day two thousand and eight is just about over and done. Luckily I avoided falling for any pranks this year, but then again I’m usually skeptical about everything I hear. The games industry sure does love this “holiday” though, don’t they? From EGM’s yearly April Fools joke, which unfortunately appears in subscribers hands in March (ah print magazines…how lovely and good for bathroom reading you are) to Mister Chief making an appearance on some Bungie map, this year was like every other.
But who was top dog? Which company had the best April Fools joke? Most certainly it was not Infinity Ward with the delay of the new COD4 maps, that wasn’t funny…and moreso because it’s true. I think, without a doubt, the prank I enjoyed the most this year wasn’t even courtesy of a developer. It was a posting over at Wired’s Game|Life blog stating that Chris Kohler got the message from Nintendo that,
”Today is April Fool's Day! Why don't you try telling a lie to some member of your family!" Heh, good times for a chuckle Chris.
It’s Blizzard who put on the greatest show for fans. Sure, the Nintendo thing got a chuckle out of me. But Blizzard went so far as to create a page for the fictional Tauren Marine, who is set to premiere in Starcraft 2. Hell, why just go with a concept sketch? Or just a teaser press release? That wouldn’t be enough for Bizzard, who put together some in-game footage and screens that were captioned, “There is a cow level!”
For their effort, Blizzard wins the prize for the very best April Fools Day effort. But being told by my Wii to go outside and play, or tell a lie to my family is also fun times.
