I suppose there have been odder things that have happened in the realm of video games, but Dire Wolf Digital has announced – in association with the Lego Group – that a series of retail based and digital copies of trading cards are on the way for Lego Universe. Sadly, though, you can't build Lego objects out of the cards...or can you?

I can’t say I entirely understand how a game like this would get a series of trading cards…it definitely makes sense in the case of City of Heroes or Champions Online, but not Legos.

Anyway, Mark William Hansen, Senior Director, LEGO Universe commented in the press release…

“We’re obviously very excited about LEGO Universe, and adding a TCG provides additional content, as well as a brand new customizable play experience,”… “The Dire Wolf team are experts in this space, and their passion for excellence made them a natural choice for this project.”

The trading card game will coincide with the features of the upcoming MMOG from the Lego Group, and gamers eager to trade cards based on the Lego Universe will be able to do so starting next year. And, of course, the game itself is scheduled for release starting in October.
