The folks developing the movie adaptation of Capcom shooter Lost Planet are apparently convinced they’re sitting on a blockbuster. According to Toshihiro Tokumaru, Capcom’s head of character contents business, the film will have a budget of $150-200 million.
Tokumaru revealed the figure in an interview on Capcom’s Investor Relations website. He also noted that Capcom has simply licensed out the project and has no direct investment in it, which seems like a wise move considering the low batting average of video game movies.
The film is being produced by Avi Arad and is in the early stages of development now. David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games and X2: X-Men United screenwriter, was tapped to write the script. Arad is perhaps best known for producing the Spider-Man films. While the three Spider-Man movies all had budgets around the same range as this Lost Planet picture, it’s surprising that so much money could be scrounged up for a movie based on a fairly new game franchise.
