GAMING BLEND
MGS4 Too Big For Blu-ray?Author: Pete Haas

Solid Snake is an old man in Metal Gear Solid 4 - and apparently a very fat one too. In an interview with Famitsu, producer/designer Hideo Kojima admitted that the highly-anticipated PS3 game had to be trimmed to fit onto a Blu-ray disc.
"There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress," Kojima said. Pretty impressive, considering a Blu-ray disc has a storage capacity of 50 GB (almost six times the capacity of a DVD). In hindsight, it makes those rumors about MGS4 appearing on Xbox 360 seem pretty ridiculous. It should also make 360 users glad they didn't attempt a port, either ("Disc One: The Options Menu"). Last week, producer Ryan Payton said in a Kojima Productions podcast that there wouldn't be enough space on the disc to include voice tracks from additional languages. I guess voiceover files from a few thousand page screenplay (just estimating) add up after awhile. It's unclear what else was trimmed from the game but if the game ends up having a very random, truncated ending, now you'll know why. Then again, randomness is the norm in that series anyway. Me, I'm hoping they cut down on Raiden's screentime to make room. |
