Are you a member of an aspiring country-folk band? Do you have dreams of being the next Def Leppard? Well, MTV, in conjunction with Harmonix, is about to give you your chance. They're currently working on a service that will give hopeful bands the opportunity to get their music heard via Rock Band.
You'll have your chance at stardom once the service goes live sometime before the year's out. It is currently in Closed Beta testing with Open Beta testing starting in August. The service will be available on the 360's Xbox Live to begin with and will have it's own store, separate from the Rock Band store. MTV games senior vice president, Paul DeGooyer, had this to say about the service; “We’ve figured out how to make it so anybody who owns and controls masters and publishing can put music into ["Rock Band"] at their own pace,” he also stated, “We’re talking about a set of serious professional tools to allow people on the front line of writing and recording songs to completely control their destiny with respect to interactive products and then giving them direct access to the download store.” Instead of dealing directly with Harmonix, artists and labels themselves can submit their songs to Harmonix-trained developers who will prepare the tracks to, perhaps, be the next big thing. Of course, beforehand the songs will undergo some testing to make sure they are free of copyright infringement, inappropriate lyrics, and to make sure they're playable within the game (bad news for all you saxophone quartets out there). Artists whose songs are uploaded through the service will be able to set their own price and shall receive 30% of the profit. I guess if you're truly a band struggling to get your stuff heard, 30% is gold to you. |
