BioWare has followed up on their recent announcement of Mass Effect 3's cooperative multiplayer with four new screenshots. In the shots, a squad of four players head into battle against Cerberus troops.

ME3's co-op plays out across a series of standalone missions. These missions start custom characters created by players, rather than Commander Shepard and company. These characters will gain experience levels and weapon upgrades by completing missions.

Your time spent in co-op can affect the ending of single-player campaign. It's part of a wider Galaxy at War system, which gives players alternate means to progress in single-player. However, you don't need to play co-op, or utilize the Galaxy at War at all, in order to get the best ending for ME3's campaign.

Owners of Battlefield 3 will get early access to a multiplayer demo for ME3. A demo with single-player and multiplayer will be released in January
