Microsoft Is OK With Blu-ray On Xbox 360Author: Steve West

When Warner Bros. announced they would be going Blu-ray exclusive in just a few short months, the masses declared the ridiculous high-def format war over. Blu-ray is your champion. Now, while I would be the first in line to congratulate a winner – and immediately slap them for dragging this out for so long – I am too pessimistic to jump on the Blu-ray victory wagon. Both camps have made too many declarations of victory in the past year.
The interesting thing is that Microsoft is fine with Blu-ray winning. Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware, told Reuters, ” It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider.” Penello also stated that he doesn’t believe the move by Warner Bros. will affect the ongoing battle between Xbox 360 and PS3. ” With the PlayStation 2, DVD was a big part in the beginning, but over time, people were not buying it as a DVD player after first year or two,” Penello said about the last generation battle. Microsoft is continuing to support only the HD-DVD format, and no plans exist for a Blu-ray player add-on. The fact is eventually we’re going to decide this war with our wallets, and MS just wants you to know they’ll be ready to support your home theater addiction in any flavor. |
