I’m a hardcore gamer as much as the next gamer over. And I admit that the Xbox brand has its flaws, but at the same time if you’re a fan of what Microsoft brought to the console market, you just have to ask yourself “Why was Microsoft so intent on killing the original Xbox?”
Now everyone (even Sony fanboys) know that if a game was multi-platform during the PS2/Xbox era, the Xbox version was always the better version, bar-none. You can argue all you like but the additional graphic upgrades, the Xbox Live support – not to mention four-player split-screen additions – and custom soundtracks made the first Xbox a must-have for any hardcore gamer. So again, why did Microsoft abandon it so quickly?
Supposedly, the production costs of the Xbox was preventing M$ from profiting from the hardware sales. For every Xbox unit sold, Microsoft lost. That’s not to mention that the original big black box was getting its butt kicked by the PS2. But in a years time, the same thing will happen with the Xbox 360 and the Wii, if sales continue the way they’re going for the Big ‘N’.
But let’s get back to the point; if the sales of the original Xbox were so awful (i.e., installed base of 24 million) and caused for abandonment, why not at least continue to support the system with software? Even with an installed base of well over 110 million PS2 units, it’s not like all those casual (and some hardcore) games that come out are selling 5 million copies each. Heck, most publishers are lucky to currently move 500,000 units of a low-ball casual game for the PS2. Even Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution Supernova has only shifted just less than 700,000 units in the US, and that’s not a low-ball game from a low-ball company. So whether it’s a 100 million or 20 million, the install base has little to do with actually selling software.
Scarface even managed to hit that million-mano mark within 3 months time...and it was only for the PS2 and Xbox! So even if Microsoft decided to have the original Xbox stop being manufactured, they could at least still have provided a leveraged platform of software support. And believe it or not, during October, 2006 the Xbox 360 shifted 1.3 million software units while the original Xbox, while only moving an estimated 3,000 consoles, managed to shift 1.2 million software units.
For a console that was abandoned by its maker, slapped in the face by leading publishers, and left for dead by retailers, the original Xbox’s software sales for November 2006 made up for 9% of total US software sales across all platforms, beating out the Wii, PSP, PS3 and GameCube. Basically, that means that the original Xbox and the Xbox 360 – during that sales period –had games that were nearly equally entertaining to a crowd about the exact same size, give or take 100,000 or so gamers. This pretty much proves once again, that it’s the software that keeps the hardware living.
Now I know a lot of you are thinking “Yeah, but all the publishers pulled out of supporting the big black box; it was destined to die after Halo 2”. True, but they were only following suit by the headmaster: Microsoft. The same thing happened with Nintendo and the Gamecube...the Big ‘N’ didn’t even promote Twilight Princess on the GC; they acted like they hated the G-Cube after the release of the Wii. When a company abandons their hardware, why should software publishers continue to support it? It’s just a common factor in the industry. And yet, it’s an opposite concept for Sony.
The PS2 is a hallmark leader in software and hardware sales, and it’s simply because Sony is sticking by their brand like Michael Jackson and someone’s ten year old little boy. In actuality, this is what will ultimately decide the outcome of the next-generation...consistency and support. Microsoft was so busy trying to trump Sony with something bigger and better that they completely forgot about the loyal gamers who jumped onboard to play the original Xbox.
Sad to say, but Microsoft only used the original big black box as a stepping stone to establish value in the console gaming market. After people realized that the Xbox was much better as a console than Windows is/was as an operating system, they quickly changed their outlook on M$'s goal for console gaming. But with the quick demise of the Xbox, it left people wondering if Microsoft was really in it for the long haul. I think, in turn, this may have hampered some of the hardcore gaming audience from transitioning from the Xbox to the Xbox 360, whole-heartedly. Even Microsoft’s own Chris Satchell admitted that half of Xbox 360 owners weren’t previous Xbox owners. Doesn’t that say something about what Xbox gamers thought about Microsoft’s move to the next-generation?
In actuality, bragging that you abandoned a console, and not even half the owners of said abandoned console moved into the next-generation, says a lot about the company. That, of course, is nothing new. Nonetheless, it certainly doesn't help M$ save face for the 12 million or so Xbox gamers who felt like they were maimed a generation of gaming. Then again, Xbox 360 (V.1) owners are starting to feel the same way now that the Elite has been announced. But hey, maybe after the 360 Elite hits the market we’ll actually get five good years of Xbox gaming, without any shenanigans or abandonment. Although I highly doubt it.

Thank you for talking about the 800 lb. gorilla in the room nobody else seems to want to talk about. I wholeheartedly agree that they seemed to completely abandon those that bought into the original Xbox. Fortunately, for myself, I was well-read on the goings-on behind the scenes at Microsoft, so I was able to desert the ship before the Captain did, like the clever rat I was. This is one of the driving reasons why I won't invest in the Xbox 360 until it reaches actual console level prices, and they work out all the kinks with those three red lights o' doom. My confidence level in Microsoft is not at what you would call historically high levels.
I got great use out of my original Xbox and jump onto the 360 as soon as it was released. I've been HD gaming for well over a year and a half and it has been great fun. Microsoft is offering a huge amount more this generation and more titles are coming to the Xbox brand then ever before. The Wii may be selling units at a faster pace (good job with the very casual and new gamer marketing) but the 360 software attach rate is getting the attention of third party developers. Xbox Live Arcade is providing an option for smaller more affordable game development for large and small development companies. I'm going to get a whole lot more from my 360 because the right choices were made. 24 million install base is ok, but not when you have a next generation console on the market. Third parties still had a choice to develop for the original Xbox, they just choose not too. There was a trail of third party Xbox1 releases up until Superman Returns. First party software support would of been a waste of money and was better used on promoting the 360.
I still have my original Xbox. I use it as my media center and for playing emulated games.

If XBox 1 managed to move 1.2 million software in Oct 2006 vs 1.3 million for XBox 360, why would supporting the old box be a waste of money? Microsoft, like the competition, makes money on the software sales. The money MS loses on the hardware for XBox 1 is most likely much less than the money they lose on the 360. But, given that MS no longer ships XBox 1 the hardware loss is only on the 360.
Abandoning XBox 1 simply forces, in MS' highly optimistic and possibly delusional mind, that supporters of the first gen XBox will migrate en masse to 360. Sorry, but the tactic they employ on Windows won't work.
Thank you for saying it Rob. I was thinking the same thing. MS thinks they can do the same thing with consoles that they do with Windows. and it is not going to work. i'm not going to go out every year or two and buy a new console so i can play the lastest game. i'll stick with sony they have proven they stick with there consoles. they ride them out until they can't make anymore money off of them. look at the PS1 they contiuned to make games for if for what, two years after the release of the PS2.
I loved the ps1 and ps2 but I have to say that the ps3 is just not doing it for me. The design makes it the new big black box on the street and that’s just not good. They made a slim ps2 you would think that they could have trimmed down the ps3. I predict that Sony will drop the price of both models of the ps3 and soon. In addition they are going to change the over all look of it. As it stands it looks like a big heavy car audio amplifier and as a person who works with car audio I don't think it’s a good look.
as for M$ and the X box I love my Halo GREEN X BOX looks much better than the black and sure they could still be putting out some great games for it but I haven't bought a new game for at least a year now. Every time I seen a new game for XBOX I just thought they have a better version for the 360 and I should just wait. I don’t have an X Box 360. I want one and now that I’ve heard news of the Elite I’m ready to buy one as soon as they are realest. And as for 360 owners who feel ripped off I just want to say cut the crap. you couldn't imagine how many people have told me for the past 2 years how much fun they've had with there 360's and after 2 years or one year even six months how they got what they paid for it out of it already. And now they feel ripped off. 2 years of game play is not getting ripped of. Even if it has a HDMI port now and 120 GB Hard Drive. If you want the HDMI so bad then take your 360 to game stop or EB games and trade it in for credit and wait fore the Elite. now I do feel a little sorry for people who may have just got one before the news was realest but its not to late to take it back to wal mart or were ever you might have got’ in yours and get your money back.
I don't get the arguments here. Yes the Elite is probably the stupidest SKU to ever find the light of day. (HDMI and resulting HDCP is a joke and the overpriced 120GB drive is unlikely to sell too many systems) But "murdering the Xbox" because they moved onto new technology? How is that irrational? Why would you bother wasting money to keep owners of an outdated piece of machinery happy when others are willing to embrace the new? They would get the short deal of the stick in the division of attention.
What would make you happy? Halo 3 for the original Xbox? We'd wait another year for them to downgrade and port the thing. It's this kind of illogical anti-microsoft sentiment at Cinema Blend that keeps bringing me over here to see what other asinine article they'll try to throw together. Congratulations, you're Mac people. Keep on thinking you're the bees knees of society. No really, I'd want to feel good about something too if I ran a Mac all day.
Rob, first party titles on the PS2 aren't helping the PS3 are they? Sony are losing exclusives left, right and center. I believe MS made the right choices to develop the 360 into a better platform with much greater software support. Because they'll be making good profits on hardware and software towards the end of this generation they wont need to cut the 360 throat so quickly.
This guy and all of you whiners need to cut the crap!! If you cant afford to get next gen, just say so. The only reason sony is still backing the ps2 is because it`s all they have right now. the ps3 is a disaster and blu ray (contrary to what sony is lying about) is not killing hd dvd. ( read about samsungs total hd player comming!) and what about the elite? who cares, just get the hdd if you need more space, vga is the same as hdmi, hdmi just carries the sound also over one cable, think about it, does a computer moniter use hdmi? and they have even higher resolutions than hdtv. m$ was smart to move on, thats why it`s called "next gen" and by the way, the "ring of death" issue is a thing of the past.
I was and still am upset that they just ran out on all the loyal xbox owners. To me it was like a slap in the face it was like they said upgrade to 360 or the hell with you.Thats not wright.
