Over the years there's been a lot of discussion about the Madden curse, whereby a star football player has a horrible season immediately after appearing on the cover of the latest installment of the game. Could the football coach spin-off of Madden, NFL Head Coach, be afflicted with a hex of its own?
Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy announced yesterday that he would be retiring from the NFL. Dungy, as you may remember, appeared on the cover of NFL Head Coach 09, released before the start of this season. Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher likewise retired from the NFL exactly one season after he appeared on the cover of the previous (and first) NFL Head Coach game.
Alright, the sample size is a little small as there's only been two NFL Head Coach games so far. Also, these are both coaches who retired voluntarily after seasons when their teams both reached the playoffs. Additionally, both coaches won Super Bowls not long before they announced their retirement.
How do I defend my NFL Head Coach theory against these points? I don't. Since when have logic and reason been required when discussing curses, particularly sports curses? Have you read some this crap? Basically every team that doesn't win a championship every year is somehow afflicted by voodoo. These curses are still cited years after being dreamed up by some bored fan or sportswriter. Years!
The question isn't "Don't you need more evidence to prove your NFL Head Coach Curse exists?" - the real question is, "Why did I wait until two coaches retired to start speculating on this curse?" By waiting for "evidence" to pour in before announcing the curse, I've just increased the chance that someone else will beat me to the curse-reporting punch (and someone probably has). Well, I'm not waiting anymore. It's time to get to the front of this mob of slack-jawed, torch-wielding peasants and become a leader in the grand national tradition of peddling superstition. The NFL Head Coach Curse is real, friends. It's real and it will steal your babies!
