The Nintendo Entertainment System is celebrating its 30th birthday this year. And if that news managed to make you feel way too old, then here is some other news that might help take the edge off, gramps: Nintendo is offering one classic game per month for $0.30 on the Wii U eShop, kicking things off right this very minute with Balloon Fight.
Announced during this morning’s Nintendo Direct event, not only is the Big N upping its Virtual Console offerings during a spring update, but the developer is also offering one game a month, for seven months, for 30 cents a pop. Games in this collection come from the original Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super Nintendo, and each will be available at the special discounted price for a full month.
In case you’re wondering when the celebration begins, the answer is that it already has. Balloon Fight is the $0.30 game for January. February’s game will be the SNES racer, F-Zero, while March will see a discount on Punch Out! Featuring Mr. Dream. Nintendo’s super hungry mascot, Kirby, will be discounted in April with Kirby’s Adventure while May will see the ever-popular Super Metroid marked way down as part of the promotion. Yoshi will be the game to get come June while one of the games that truly started it all, Donkey Kong will close out the event in July.
If you’re looking to tackle some classic gaming goodness, or perhaps you wouldn’t mind a copy of an oldie but a goodie lying around your virtual collection, you could do a heck of a lot worse than these seven games Nintendo is offering at just shy of free. And don’t forget: Balloon Fight is available right now and each game will only be discounted for 30 days, so you might want to fire up the Wii U and get to downloading.
