No PSP Go UMD-to-Digital Conversion Program At Launch

When the PSP Go hits stores on October 1st, it won't make previous PSP models obsolete. Why not? Because users won't be able to convert their UMD games into digital files.

Unlike other PSP models, the PSP Go has no UMD drive. All games are downloaded through the Internet to the unit's hard drive. At E3, Sony stated that they were "putting together a good will program" that would allow PSP Go owners to download digital copies of games that they previously bought the UMD for.

However, today a Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesman told Kotaku that the UMD conversion program will not be offered at this time due to "legal and technical reasons." Doesn't mean that it won't happen at some future date but it does mean that you'll have to hold onto your UMDs for longer than you expected, as well as an old PSP to play them on.
